From my previous experience teaching a lot of students. The most vital point the student wants from their mentor is compassion and sympathy to connect with them. Once I can connect with them, I can understand at what level they are currently in and use the best method to help them strive to the best possible level they can achieve for the given…

Rather than provide a mass amount of information, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is instil a sense of confidence and interest in the subject. Personally the experiences that I have taken with me from systems of education have been how applicable the framework of learning is to other facets of the reasoning process.…

The most crucial thing in tutoring must be that the teacher should be impartial, when it comes to tutoring a group of students. The tutor must be able to understand each student's level and must be able to teach with patience. The tutor must make learning fun with practical examples and concept-wise learning methods. Moreover, teacher must be able…

A tutor is not responsible for not passing the exam only, rather he needs to guide the student toward a better future for the student & a wellbeing for the society. I believe that "The teacher is the backbone of the nation". I can understand whether the student really understood or not. "Quality study" is more important than "Quantity study",…

In my opinion, a tutor should foster a safe and encouraging space for learning, build students’ confidence, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. It’s about empowering students, not just teaching content. In fact, implementing teaching strategies to adapt to the student's learning style is crucial for better comprehension.…

I believe the role of the tutor is to build the basic skills of english comprehension/essay writing to that the student is prepared to tackle any assignment or examination. I do not believe in rote learning but instead on delving deeply into specific issues a student may have with writing and to address them methodically. It is not about the…

It is important to be patient and a good listener. Students learn at their own pace and you cannot push them. Even if something seems simple to you, for the student it might not be. Being a good listener means not dominating the conversation. Allow the students to ask questions and give the students plenty of time to answer your questions.…

I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

To be responsive and constructive, I felt that I learned the best when I felt connected with the teacher and the class. It can be distracting to feel uncomfortable whilst learning. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student are: - Showing empathy and support (sharing one's own experience as a past student from a perspective of strength, resilience and learning) - Promoting empowerment - this means not doing questions for a student, but engaging them in shared decision-making about working through…

My son can't wait to have his maths lessons with his tutor every week! She is helping him learn through wonderful and fun ways!
Konstantina, Preston

Inside Heidelberg WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on factorising algebraic expressions and substitution in more complex equations to build confidence with foundational algebra skills.

In Year 9, Jacob practised graphing parabolas as well as substituting values into quadratic functions, using worked examples for clarity.

For Year 10, Sam concentrated on solving linear equations and revisited core trigonometric ratios—sine, cosine, and tangent to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often forgot to bring her maths textbook, which meant gaps in reviewing problem areas and "she needed to bring her maths books so I could see what she had struggled with this week."

In a senior class, one student ran out of time during an exam; as the tutor put it, "he missed some simple errors" because he didn't check answers before submitting.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student's algebra work was messy and hard to follow—incorrect values crept in when calculations weren't clearly laid out.

Distraction in English led another student to guess answers without reading passages closely.

Recent Achievements

One Heidelberg West tutor noticed Kiera now tackles more complex maths problems without hesitation—just weeks ago she'd often wait for reassurance before starting.

In Year 8, Ollie moved from making frequent mistakes in timed tests to using a standard formula they developed together for negative indices, helping him answer these questions independently and with fewer errors.

Meanwhile, Felix in primary school has shifted from being distracted during class to focusing well enough to score 8/8 on his fractions test after struggling with this topic earlier; he completed all the questions accurately on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
