Inspire, Influence, and be a cheerleader. ( for everyone) For me, teaching is a divine profession and Knowledge is something that needs to be shared. The utmost thing a teacher can do for a student is to share their knowledge, experiences and influence them to become better citizens of this world. I was one of the top students when I used to…

I believe that tutors are teachers’ assistant. Our job is to find out what students struggle after receiving lessons from the teacher and dive deep into it so that students can fully understand the concept and be able to solve the problem with our help. As a pre-service teacher, during placement, I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with…

The most important things a tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam pressure,…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. However, this can be challenging especially when they have many knowledge gaps and feel fallen behind at school. A good tutor is able to identify and fill in those gaps, helping students realise their full potentials and gain confidence. It is also important…

Help them: - To study in a more effective way. - To answer questions that are related to the subject and real life. - To help students achieve their target in the subjects or tests or exams that they want. I think I don't really have many strengths and much experience as a tutor but patience and determination to help people in studying would be…

Making a student feel comfortable and eager for what they are doing is my priority as a tutor (because Math and Science are interesting!!!). Also, helping the student gain deep knowledge about the field of study is also one of the most important things a tutor can do for their students. I believe a Tutor should be able to sympathise with and understand the students' mindset, each student has their own way of learning and their own learning speed. A tutor's job is to cater their teaching style to fit their students so that they can be comfortable with learning. My strengths are providing students with engaging lessons and…

While I think it's important to assist students from an academic standpoint, I also think it's important for tutors to help students develop a sense of purpose in their studies. Teaching students to direct their motivations towards their goals, rather than solely their grades, can be just as important for their future as anything a tutor can…

Besides grades, I would say that a tutor is also essentially teaching the student life skills such as responsibility and perseverance. I had this unmotivated student. He wouldn't complete the homework that I had given him and often fell asleep in class. I started to find out the reason behind his behavior and I used it to my advantage, Over…

A student will need a tutor because he/she couldn't understand what was being taught in class. The best thing for a tutor to do is focus on the parts that the student failed to understand and strengthen their understanding in those areas. Anybody's hold on Science is only as good as their understanding of the basics. So, it is best to focus on the…

I believe a tutor should not only help a student academically but also boost their confidence and foster a love for learning. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths and areas of improvement in particular to improve the student's overall performance in a particular subject area. For me the most important thing a tutor can do is to guide the student in such a way that at the end of it, the student is able to lead by himself in the direction he was originally intended to go. It is similar to the lines of giving a man a fish to teaching him to fish. The tutor has to ignite the spark of interest in the student so that the…

I believe that the things a tutor should have the most are patience and expertise. Since tutoring a student is challenging depends on how fast the student can cope up with the discussion, so patience is a must to help them understand the topic. Besides, expertise is also an important thing, because there are topics that students find hard to…

The primary contributor to a student's poor academic performance isn't the lack of knowledge but the fear of failure. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to help my students in tackling these challenges. I believe that a tutor's role is crucial in creating a learning space where doubts and curiosity are welcome. I can guide them in…

Inside Henley Beach SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Samuel focused on all aspects of linear equations, from finding intercepts and gradients to sketching and interpreting graphs.

For Year 8, Emily practiced area and perimeter of rectangles, worked with 24-hour time, explored column and dot plots, tackled long multiplication, and was introduced to properties of light and geometric transformations like reflection and rotation.

Another Year 8 student revised 3D shapes and their nets, practiced plotting points on the Cartesian plane, reviewed rotational geometry concepts, and strengthened times tables along with long multiplication skills.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits impacted progress across year levels.

In Year 8 maths, did not complete homework as instructed, leaving double-digit multiplication shaky and undermining class confidence.

A Year 10 student faced similar issues: Student still did not complete homework with proper working showed either, making it tough to master problem-solving in fractions.

During a senior geometry session, the student forgot to bring previous work, leading to confusion when combining ratio and shape concepts.

In upper primary, skipping steps in order of operations meant errors multiplied—she takes too many steps at a time—and slowed improvement on mixed number tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Henley Beach South noticed that a Year 10 student, Samuel, who previously hesitated when tackling percentage increase and decrease questions, is now able to solve them independently and even explained the transfer of heat through particles and waves with clarity.

In a recent session, Emily (Year 7) shifted from needing step-by-step help with fractions to confidently adding and subtracting them using the butterfly method.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to guess answers during problem-solving activities now voices her thought process out loud and attempts new strategies before asking for guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Henley Beach Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Henley Beach Primary School.
