The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to make learning interesting and engaging. The framework I use is below. - Evaluate and diagnose each student’s unique learning needs. - Prioritise and develop learning goals with each student to support their learning needs. - Develop lesson plans tailored to the needs of each…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student to be providing the student with the toolbox to be able to solve problems effectively in the chosen subject. In addition, a tutor can provide the student with confidence and belief in oneself, which helps the student academically, and in general. My strengths as a tutor include very…

Academic impact is a primary objective of a tutor. The result for a student may not always be dramatic, going from F to A+, but it can also involve slow progress. Always staying engaged with the student, periodically inquiring about their comfort in learning the subject, and creating a conducive atmosphere for learning are essential. A tutor must…

To me, a tutor must be able to effectively communicate ideas to students in a manner that allows them to understand the concept. Understanding of more conceptually difficult topics is a difficulty every student faces and is ultimately the barrier against marks. Being able to really connect with a student and portray the idea at hand in a manner in…

I think the bonding between the tutor and the student is very important. If the student doesn't feel comfortable talking to the tutor, he or she will never learn effectively. They need to be comfortable enough so that they can ask questions whenever they need to! I am a very easy person to talk to. I am not shy and am willing to speak up. As a…

I think it goes without saying that a tutor should help their student/s to understand concepts so that the student can improve on their grades. But I believe that tutoring goes so much further beyond that. A tutor should strive to truly engage the student in their learning. A good tutor will motivate and inspire the student so that they are…

My greatest asset as a tutor would be my ability to really zone in on any problems a student may have in particular. I believe it is important to address the student's main academic concerns by understanding their goals and deriving a plan to achieve those goals. Identifying the best technique to teach the student is the best thing a tutor can do. Students learn much faster when they are taught according to their methods of learning. Identifying the right technique to teach will lead to the student identifying the perfect technique to study in the presence or absence of a tutor. I have had enough…

First and foremost, helping them score well for the examinations they are going to sit for. It's really important to be patient and maintain an open mind. Every student is different andearns different topics at different rates. When I was young I put pressure on myself to learn every topic as well as my peers and at the same rate. This caused a lot of stress for me and made me feel inadequate if I wasn't able to meet my goal. I think…

Inside HillsdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Arden focused on algebraic expressions and manipulating numbers with surds, as well as interpreting functions and graphs in preparation for her upcoming exam.

In Year 11, Michael worked through first principles of calculus, including finding tangents to curves, and applied the chain rule and product rule using targeted practice questions.

For Year 12, Olivia revised advanced differentiation techniques such as the quotient rule and related rates, alongside sequences and series problems drawn from past trial exams.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 Maths session, one student hesitated to attempt Level 3 questions unless prompted, leading to missed opportunities for deeper understanding.

Another, in Year 10 Science, understood content but struggled with scientific terminology—"she should pay more attention on the meaning of the terms," noted a tutor—which slowed progress in written explanations.

Exam timing repeatedly challenged a senior student: extra minutes were spent recalling formulas under pressure instead of answering more questions.

In Year 7–8 algebra and geometry work, untidy working sometimes made it difficult to trace errors, causing confusion during revision and wasting valuable lesson time retracing steps.

Recent Achievements

One Hillsdale tutor recently noticed Lucy, a Year 12 student, is no longer hesitating with challenging differentiation problems—she now solves them independently after struggling to get started just weeks ago.

Ruby, also in high school, used to avoid tricky algebraic extensions but is now choosing harder questions herself and applying calculus techniques without prompting.

Meanwhile, Selena in primary years had difficulty spotting number patterns; last session she quickly identified a complex pattern rule on her own and converted between 12-hour and 24-hour time accurately.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I'm very pleased with Carly at this stage Nerys' attitude towards Math has changed already and that's extremely positive.  Carly is always there on time and stays the full hour, she also communicates effectively about any schedule changes. So far so good.

Thank you for your email. Based on the sessions held to date with Ai-linh, Nathan is really enjoying her teaching style. From my perspective she is really sweet and is always punctual and consistent which has really maximised Nathan's learning and our ability to plan for effectively. Thank you for arranging for Ai-linh to assist Nathan.

I personally feel that my biggest accomplishment was becoming a more confident individual with strong leadership. This is as I was a mentor to my students whom all looked up to me and I felt more mature and responsible in helping them deal with their academic difficulties. Furthermore, Tutoring also helped me in organisation and time management in allocating tutoring timeslots as well as homework marking into my daily lifestyle. This is truly reflected in my full-time career now where I am able to handle multiple tasks and commitments very effectively. I had been previously been tutoring privately and felt it would be beneficial for me to tutor for an agency in order to attain professional recognition for my resume and future. During my interview process, my tutoring experience definitely weighed into me attaining a graduate role. The main reason I tutor and have been tutoring for such a long time now is the self-satisfaction I get back from helping others. I love relaying knowledge to others who are willing to learn and feel emotionally rewarded when it helps my students academically excel. I would recommend Ezy Math to everyone (tutors and potential clients) as they're very easy to deal with and educate their tutors with ongoing modules as well as provide supplementary materials to their clients.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Public School.
