One of the most important values a tutor can have is patience in order to foster an environment where the student is not afraid to ask questions or for an explanation of a topic. It is also important that the tutor is able to instill clear thinking and practice for a student in order to be able to solve concepts and understand them on their own. I…

Help them engage with materials, especially when the students are struggling with the material. Also to guide the students to the right thinking process when working on a problem. I believe I am good at creating a connection towards my students and I’m also very patient when it comes to teaching someone, and I am good at delivering the teaching…

Be supportive and not make tutoring seem like a chore but a time to create a deeper understanding of the subject. I am patient with students, I like to reassure them that it is okay if they don't understand right away and try my best to explain to them until they do…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to explain the work and give advice or point the student in the right direction rather than directly telling the studnet the answer. I am able to explain the information in ways students will be able to understand it and i am also patient and abel to effectively explain issues without…

Being supportive and encouraging is very important. Letting people make mistake and help them to learn off it are some things that I consider crucial in the learning process. I am very patient and always try to see things from other people perspective. I always ask people what their learning style is and accommodate to it to ensure they learn…

A tutor should be able to engage the student in the subject as much as possible, whilst explaining the big ideas behind what they are doing. This, i believe, will help students not only understand but also love the subject and get interested in it, which in turn will promote more engagement from their side and hence increase their grades. I think…

I believe motivating the students to feel confident in the subject and their ability to answer the questions and tasks to their best standard is the most important thing. We are a source of knowledge but our job is to give the students the tools to success rather than answer their work for them. As a tutor, I am highly organised and have an…

The most important thing is to be a friend. Someone to always support the student as they undergo the emotional journey of highschool and exams. Second to that is to materially improve their marks by explaining concepts and using repetition to increase accuracy. My strengths are being personable and relating to the students struggles with…

I'd say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is making them feel more confident in their ability to learn a lot of the time. Because they may feel as though a topic is beyond them but once broken down in ways that they already understand it benefits them wholly not just as a student but as a person in general. My strengths as a…

A tutor must always be very patient since each student is different and should be handled with care. Furthermore, there is no hard and fast rule in education, so a tutor should be open to learning and improving themselves. Listening to and observing students is also an essential quality for a tutor. I am a highly efficient problem solver, and I…

I consider motivation and fostering a growth mindset to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student. A tutor should be able to inspire students to achieve excellence in their respective fields and create that growth mindset that will help them in their future. When I was a student, the most important thing a tutor could do for me was offer me revision resources and previous exams since these provided the best source of practise. Personally, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Since learning can be challenging, tutors should be willing to explain the concepts to students multiple times and provide ample time for practice and understanding. First of all, I am capable to adapt my teaching style to different students. Furthermore,…

For me, the most important thing that a tutor can do is to develop students' confidence and ability in their studies. By working with a student personally by meeting them where they are at in their abilities, a student's academic confidence can grow as they are able to focus on areas of their work that they specifically struggle with. I think this…

Inside HillsdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Arden focused on algebraic expressions and manipulating numbers with surds, as well as interpreting functions and graphs in preparation for her upcoming exam.

In Year 11, Michael worked through first principles of calculus, including finding tangents to curves, and applied the chain rule and product rule using targeted practice questions.

For Year 12, Olivia revised advanced differentiation techniques such as the quotient rule and related rates, alongside sequences and series problems drawn from past trial exams.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 Maths session, one student hesitated to attempt Level 3 questions unless prompted, leading to missed opportunities for deeper understanding.

Another, in Year 10 Science, understood content but struggled with scientific terminology—"she should pay more attention on the meaning of the terms," noted a tutor—which slowed progress in written explanations.

Exam timing repeatedly challenged a senior student: extra minutes were spent recalling formulas under pressure instead of answering more questions.

In Year 7–8 algebra and geometry work, untidy working sometimes made it difficult to trace errors, causing confusion during revision and wasting valuable lesson time retracing steps.

Recent Achievements

One Hillsdale tutor recently noticed Lucy, a Year 12 student, is no longer hesitating with challenging differentiation problems—she now solves them independently after struggling to get started just weeks ago.

Ruby, also in high school, used to avoid tricky algebraic extensions but is now choosing harder questions herself and applying calculus techniques without prompting.

Meanwhile, Selena in primary years had difficulty spotting number patterns; last session she quickly identified a complex pattern rule on her own and converted between 12-hour and 24-hour time accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Public School.
