I believe that above all else, a tutor needs to make students feel comfortable with their materials. Once the students are confident in themselves, most problems can usually be overcome by the students without help. I think my greatest strength as a tutor is being able to help students simplify and break down problems into more digestible…

I believe that the most important thing for a tutor is to provide a comfortable environment for their students. It's incredibly stressful to do additional tutoring outside of school, so as a tutor, it is my job to ensure that they are content with how the lessons are progressing. I think a tutor should be more of a companion, someone who…

I consider motivation and fostering a growth mindset to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student. A tutor should be able to inspire students to achieve excellence in their respective fields and create that growth mindset that will help them in their future. My academic grades are my greatest strength as I have achieved top results…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be their friends and always listen to them when they have something to tell. If the students are having trouble, we can counsel them or give them advice so they can figure something out. Being friends with the students not only will make us get near them, it can also make them feel ease…

I think the most important a tutor can do for student is to support and encourage them mentally. Sometimes they might feel disappointed in themselves because of the marks or because they do not understand certain concept, so it is important for a tutor to teach them in a way that they feel comfortable and encourage them. So I think the tutor…

I believe all students learn at different levels and a tutor can help them realise their potential. Students often hear about the potential they have and feel like they haven't got what it takes, a tutor can empower them and boost their confidence to take step towards their big goals. I'm enthusiastic and confident in my knowledge of mathematics.…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to offer fresh perspectives on the things being taught in school. I firmly believe that individuals learn and think in diverse ways. Much like solving a problem can involve various methods leading to the same solution, students may grasp knowledge more effectively through one…

Being patient with the student when introducing new ideas. It can be difficult to grasp new ideas when first introduced, and it is vital to the student's learning that they understand and are confident with the basic concepts before building on these concepts. The ability to break down a difficult concept into small easy to understand pieces to…

The most important consideration a tutor can do for a student is being able to motivate their students, which allows them to learn with more passion, thus allows them to enjoy doing extra work. I would say that the tutor developing a relationship of trust with the student is one of the most important things. Whilst it\'s all good and well for the tutor to deliver the class well, if the student does not trust the tutor to actually better them in their studies, no progress will be made. I think that learning goes hand in hand with…

A tutor should be able to concisely break down challenging concepts into simple explanations to ensure that the student can thoroughly understand these concepts,…

To me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster a transformative journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Beyond just imparting knowledge, I believe that a tutor's role is to serve as a guide, mentor, and cheerleader rolled into one. To promote effective learning and bolster a student's academic progress, a tutor should consider the following actions: 1. Develop personalized teaching plans tailored to each student's learning foundations and pace. 2. Demonstrate enough patience and kindness, offering positive reinforcement and celebrating their accomplishments. 3. Ensure…

Inside HillsdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Arden focused on algebraic expressions and manipulating numbers with surds, as well as interpreting functions and graphs in preparation for her upcoming exam.

In Year 11, Michael worked through first principles of calculus, including finding tangents to curves, and applied the chain rule and product rule using targeted practice questions.

For Year 12, Olivia revised advanced differentiation techniques such as the quotient rule and related rates, alongside sequences and series problems drawn from past trial exams.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 Maths session, one student hesitated to attempt Level 3 questions unless prompted, leading to missed opportunities for deeper understanding.

Another, in Year 10 Science, understood content but struggled with scientific terminology—"she should pay more attention on the meaning of the terms," noted a tutor—which slowed progress in written explanations.

Exam timing repeatedly challenged a senior student: extra minutes were spent recalling formulas under pressure instead of answering more questions.

In Year 7–8 algebra and geometry work, untidy working sometimes made it difficult to trace errors, causing confusion during revision and wasting valuable lesson time retracing steps.

Recent Achievements

One Hillsdale tutor recently noticed Lucy, a Year 12 student, is no longer hesitating with challenging differentiation problems—she now solves them independently after struggling to get started just weeks ago.

Ruby, also in high school, used to avoid tricky algebraic extensions but is now choosing harder questions herself and applying calculus techniques without prompting.

Meanwhile, Selena in primary years had difficulty spotting number patterns; last session she quickly identified a complex pattern rule on her own and converted between 12-hour and 24-hour time accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Public School.
