From my experience, the desire to learn and succeed must come from within, but once that feeling is there it is the tutor's responsibility to cultivate and grow this passion and to translate it into continuous improvement. Hence, one of the most important things that a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and to meet those needs in a…

The most important part of tutoring is passion for sharing knowledge. This may mean going for unpaid overtime, figuring out different teaching methods in your own time, and being happy by simply making a difference in someone's life. I understand what it feels like to struggle in a subject, so I believe I can use that understanding to provide high…

Although I have no professional experience as a tutor, I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to be able to give them the right amount of time and space for them to learn independently- but always be ready to be bombarded with questions. I believe the most important role of a tutor is to understand their students well, recognizing both their strengths and weaknesses. By focusing more on areas where students struggle, a tutor can provide targeted support. Additionally, keeping study sessions engaging is essential, as a dull environment can hinder students' ability to grasp new…

A tutor should be able to teach a student how to learn. They shouldn't just coach students on what they are studying but also how they are studying - whether their mode of study is effective and efficient enough. So that in the end, the student is able to tackle any subject or obstacle they run into without a tutor. Being friendly and…

I feel like one of the most common problems I see with fellow University Students is a mental block carried over from their high school days - the preconception that they "simply can't do" particular things or that they're not good enough at a subject to attempt things. Inside HiltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ruby revised division strategies, focusing on inverse operations and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 using the written method.

For Year 5, Ashton worked through fractions with different denominators as well as decimal addition and subtraction.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ella practised measurement conversions between kilograms and grams along with regular mental maths exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student faced confusion completing a fraction number line revision sheet, as noted: "there was some question on how to complete it," and did not seek clarification from their teacher—this hesitation delayed progress.

In Year 10 maths, another student needed repeated reminders to check working out, especially when handling area calculations for irregular shapes; missed steps led to incorrect answers that went unnoticed until review.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner avoided verbalising column values during addition tasks, which made it harder to spot mistakes and slowed development of place value understanding.

Each scenario left students less confident heading into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Hilton tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to rush through maths problems is now double-checking subtraction answers by adding back, catching mistakes before moving on.

In another session, a Year 7 student—who'd previously guessed at fraction questions—successfully simplified different types of fractions without prompting and explained the process aloud.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated to read out loud completed an entire reading comprehension passage with only minimal help and answered all follow-up questions independently.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are certainly happy and off to a great start. Edward has been great, punctual & helpful. I am confident this  trend will continue and George's math will only improve.

We found Luke to be a knowledgeable and good tutor who worked well with Jessica. He was able to provide us with 2 tutoring sessions prior to Jessica's exam. I think more than anything he helped settle her nerves and was able to provide exam study strategies to enable her to approach the Chemistry exam in a prepared and calm manor.

Thanks, we all love love love Kieran.  Just what both my kids needed.  Awesome tutor!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Willagee Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hilton Primary School.
