Listen carefully to the students and constantly helping them in resolving their issues . Using some innovative and flexible strategies to teach students . We need to build relationship with them and give them the independence to learn from their mistakes. I used to help my neighbours in completing their works and help them in their exams . So…

I think the most important thing to understand is that each student has different needs and styles of learning and you need to tailor your teaching to the way that would help the student learn and engage the best. Patience and trying to make people understand the concepts in a way that they would grasp it the…

Firstly, I feel a tutor should make a student feel comfortable and trusted such that the latter never hesitates to ask a question and clear his/her doubts. Also, a student should feel that the tutor is genuinely interested in his/her progress and thus, I feel a student remains motivated and does his/her best. I believe that I have the patience and…

I think most importantly a tutor should be able to engage students more in learning through group/individual activities to keep them going and learning with the entire class. Rather than just explaining things or delivering the lecture. It is important to check their understanding of the topic being explained or information being provided. This…

I think it is very important as a tutor to start a topic from its basic and build a strong idea of the subject material so that the student enjoys studying. That is going to boost up the student's confidence on the subject. I can not stress enough about the importance of building confidence in a student. I am very patient with my students and I am…

An exceptional tutor would ensure their students have an in-depth understanding of concepts by altering their teaching methods to best complement the student's learning capacity and to the material being taught. Although this is a personal preference, I also believe that, as a tutor, being available for students to ask questions outside of the…

In my view, the paramount role of a tutor is to cultivate a learning environment filled with patience and empathy. By recognising the challenges students may encounter along their learning journey and demonstrating empathy towards these obstacles, a positive and supportive environment is created between the student and tutor. This allows me to…

The most important thing is to give the students better clarity than when they first joined the session. I have a very logical approach to teaching my specialty subjects, taking methodical and incremental learning steps to ensure the session is successful. In addition, by focusing on student comprehension, I make sure that the student does not…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build confidence, create a supportive learning environment, and make learning fun. It's all about helping students believe in themselves, giving them the tools to succeed, and keeping things engaging. I'm good at breaking down complex stuff into easy-to-understand pieces. I'm also patient and…

A tutor's most important role is to create a supportive space where students feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes. I believe tutors should adapt to the student's learning style, build confidence, and teach skills that help the student become an independent learner. Encourage and motivate them to learn, without the right attitude towards learning it can become a chore. Being resilient and have a determination to always improve rather than get caught up in a bad mark. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and make learning feel approachable. When students feel supported and understood, they're far more likely to engage, ask questions, and take risks, which is where real growth happens! A great tutor doesn't just explain the content clearly; they also adapt to the…

The tutor must understand the student. Some students try really hard to learn but may fail to show successful results. The tutor must understand this, assure the student that he/she is making progress, and guide the student every inch of the way. Second, the tutor must consider the pursuits of the students as his/her own personal endeavor as…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to be a reliable guide to the students. Every students has their own way of learning and pace of learning. To begin with, a tutor must encourage a student to do better and learn from previous mistakes. Getting upset/impatient with a student is only going to discourage the student and prevent him/her from reaching potential; and that's the opposite of the desired goal. In addition, confidence has to be built in a student; this way a student will be able…

The most important thing that a tutor must do is form a genuine connection with the student based on trust and integrity. This can be achieved through humour, motivation and sharing likes/dislikes. This allows for long-term teaching because of a comfortable environment allowing the student to perform to the best of their ability. My questioning…

For me, I believe that not only is it important for a tutor to impart academic knowledge upon the student in their lessons, but also to make sure to impart this knowledge in an engaging, creative way and check in, providing extra guidance and exercises as necessary so as much as possible they can truly understand and absorb the concepts. I also…

Genuinely understanding the students need and tailoring the best approach of teaching accordingly is the best thing a tutor can do. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

Allow the student to make mistakes and correct those mistakes. Explain to the student that mistakes are a part of learning. Do not criticise but suggest improvements. Patience to deal with students at different levels is needed to tutor. Also, sufficient knowledge of the subject being tutored is necessary to tutor and to make the student confident…

Inside Homebush WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Rishika worked through questions on perimeter and place value, and also practised the four operations with algebra.

Year 8 student Alex focused on data representation—using frequency distribution tables—and calculating mean, median, range, mode, and identifying outliers.

For a senior high school student, Michael tackled calculus topics such as finding gradients of curves using differentiation from first principles and applying the chain rule to solve rates of change problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student rushed through their school homework, which led to avoidable errors in two-step equations with negatives—"so many common mistakes that he can easily avoid," as noted by the tutor.

In Year 11 Maths, one student's written work on completing the square was difficult to follow; skipping clear layout made it harder to spot and correct missteps.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student sometimes squeezed calculations together when multiplying two-digit numbers, making her working confusing and leading to mixed-up addition and multiplication steps.

When organization or presentation slips, even strong understanding doesn't always shine through in assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Homebush West tutor noted a high school student who had previously hesitated to ask for help is now openly working through tough algebra questions together, especially tackling two-step equations that were once a stumbling block.

Another win came from an older student mastering differentiation shortcuts and applying them to find gradients—something that took multiple sessions of patient practice.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Rishika used to need reminders about place value but this week completed all her perimeter and addition tasks independently, showing new self-assurance by checking her own answers before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Strathfield Council Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Homebush West Public School.
