The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student find their particular learning style, study habits and exam technique. There are multiple ways to view the same problem, and each person finds some easier to understand than others. The best thing a tutor can do is provide as many different ways of understanding and interpreting the…

Clearly, it is being a strong and unwavering support as well as a teammate who helps a student gain confidence and achieve the goals. As a tutor, I am very patient with students. I help them gain confidence by communicating, supporting, and always emphasizing what they do well (good answers, reasoning...). I have a strong ability to adapt to be…

Teach the student how to approach new content, instead of just teaching them the content that they need to learn at that moment (of course, doing this as well is also beneficial). I am multi skilled in quite a few areas and very well versed having completed them very recently at an HSC level, and I believe I am approachable as a…

Being a tutor doesn't mean you just teach a student concepts like ABC, being a tutor is like mentoring someone. Being a mentor is someone that can provide guidance, support, and advice to someone with less knowledge in a particular subject field. In tandem, providing a learning environment that encourages to not fear getting things wrong is also…

Aside from teaching them content, a tutor should act as a mentor and a leader for the student, guiding them in the right direction with not only their studies, but their progression into university as well. Inside Hornsby HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sam worked on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and practiced equivalent fractions using visual aids.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled simplifying complex algebraic fractions as well as multiplying and dividing indices, focusing on error correction from past exams.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam focused on solving linear equations—making x the subject—and handling algebraic expressions with negatives and fractions to build confidence for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often felt overconfident in maths, skipping double-checks and "not finishing the question," which led to small errors going unnoticed during an exam.

For a Year 11 topic on algebraic manipulation, the tutor noted: "He didn't study the material or attempt questions beforehand," so gaps in understanding slowed progress during sessions.

In Year 4, one student avoided writing out working for division problems, relying too much on mental steps—this made it difficult to catch calculation mistakes.

When homework was incomplete or rushed across several years, concepts like fractions and indices weren't fully retained by the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hornsby Heights recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of needing hints, completed several challenging algebraic manipulation problems with only minimal help and started laying out his working more clearly than before.

In Year 11, another student showed real initiative by preparing questions ahead of the session on sales commissions and perimeters—something he'd hesitated to do in previous weeks—and engaged actively throughout.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who was initially unsure about using equations began creating and applying them independently during the lesson, finishing by writing out her own equation for a practice question without prompting.

Thank you for your follow up email. I think Daniel has done a great job connecting with Anthony. Hopefully Anthony will gain some confidence with his maths.

Thanks for your follow up. All seems to be going well so far . Anthony seems quite comfortable with Max and I think a little more confident . Of course it's still early days so we will assess his progress again soon.

Cassie is great! Ashley is already showing improvement in class and is happy with Cassie as she is easy to understand and can relate to her well. Thank you
