I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them patient, let them know that it is okay to make mistakes and encourage them to continue to learn and practice in order to master a skill. A can-do attitude is the most important thing a tutor can teach. I myself used to learn concepts in a way that were not theoretical but…

A tutor's responsibility includes building a student's confidence by helping them believe in their abilities, and to ensure they develop a deep understanding of concepts, not just memorization. Tailoring the teaching approach to the student's learning style is important for making the material more accessible. Also, creating a safe and supportive…

First and foremost is to have a set plan to what the course structure will be and how I will proceed because without the plan the student will have a lot of difficulty in understanding the concepts. The most important thing a tutor should do is to keep a check on whether the student is understanding the concept or not. One to one interaction, calm…

The most important thing a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and provide clear, tailored explanations. Building a supportive and patient environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes is key. It’s also essential to guide them through problem-solving, helping them develop the skills to tackle challenges…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

The most important thing would probably be being able to form an understanding of how the student learns, and then being able to adjust lessons according to that. I think also just being patient for that student to have that light bulb moment, and then commending them when they do. In addition, just holding myself somewhat accountable for the…

Passing on knowledge keeping in mind the strength, weaknesses and the time required for the student to grasp the content that is being communicated. First and foremost, I would argue that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide motivation and encouragement; cultivating the student's desire to learn and succeed. If this is achieved, academic success simply becomes a by-product. Secondly, a tutor must act as a resource that complements learning within a school…

A tutor must create a friendly bond with the student so they feel free to ask anything and clear all the concepts. Inside HughesdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Harry revised core trigonometry concepts and completed a past VCE exam under timed conditions.

A Year 10 student focused on matrix arithmetic, working through examples of both multiplication and transformations using visual aids.

For Year 6, Zara practised converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time formats and solved problems involving telling the time on analogue clocks, including interpreting phrases like "quarter to" and "half past."

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student "occasionally skipped through a question and made an error"—not showing all working led to repeated mistakes in algebraic tasks, which slowed progress during revision.

For a Year 10 student revising domain and range, relying mainly on visual memory rather than written notes meant graph interpretation errors lingered.

In English (Year 7), essay writing suffered because ideas weren't clearly organised; as noted, "she needs to follow the essay plan so she stays on topic."

Meanwhile, unfinished homework in both Years 6 and 11 left key gaps unaddressed before tests—especially with simultaneous equations and creative writing tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Hughesdale tutor noticed a big shift with one Year 9 student who used to guess at equations but now talks through her reasoning out loud and checks her work before moving on.

In a senior maths session, a Year 11 boy who'd previously struggled with polynomial long division was able to tackle an application problem without any prompting by the end of the lesson.

Meanwhile, one younger student in Year 4 completed all her homework and even took on some extra-challenging extension questions she would have avoided just weeks ago, finishing them without needing help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh Grammar.
