I think that these 3 things are a must : Work on Student’s strengths. Look for students interests , so we can connect them to the contents being thought. Constant feedback I have good rapport with students , and I firmly believe that all starts with connection, so students can feel at ease. Adaptability is key because with individual…

the most important part a tutor like me can do is encouraging students to believe in their abilities and providing positive reinforcement as they progress. Also, the gist of my 2 years of tutoring would be offering tailored teaching experience where adapting teaching methods to suit the student’s learning styles and needs and working on…

Having empathy, because not all content comes too easy for students as it does for us, obviously. Having patience, because it can be frustrating if a tutor just expects a student to "get it" immediately. Being kind. This seems obvious but you may be surprised the number of teachers I've had and met who are not kind, and they are extremely hard…

There are many important things that a tutor can do for a student, one of which is regardless of our personal feelings, it is important that we should work with each of our student to ensure their success. Act like you are happy to be there and see them. The tutor should always be transparent and ready to work. Also, a tutor should always keep up…

Building confidence is the most important thing a tutor can possibly do for a student. It's very important for a tutor to listen a student's worry points and problems and guide him accordingly to overcome them without breaking his confidence. It's necessary to be a good mentor and help students just not academically but advice them on any…

To get them engaged and interested in a subject or topic. Although it is good to just teach the student how to pass the exam, I believe that by truly engaging and motivating a student they will get the most reward and the best results from their work. I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. My personal opinion on me is I can understand the problem being faced by the students despite their denial about the problem and eventually bring them…

The teacher's professionalism, encouragement, and patience. Teenagers cannot focus on study for a long time so tutor has to be fun and patient to explain the knowledge and catch their attention. Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. The most important thing a tutor can do is to ignite a student's curiosity and passion for learning. When a student finds joy in the process, success naturally follows. All students are different, and they have different needs. Providing the right support is crucial in my opinion. Understanding where exactly the student needs help, and…

A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

The most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is providing as much information as they can. Answer their questions, solve their problems, and make sure that they really understand the material. I am a very good listener. I believe creating a comfortable environment for the student to thrive in, and being able to adapt to different students learning styles are among the most important things a tutor can do. 1. Be prepared. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to be prepared for the session. That includes preparing the lesson beforehand and getting everything ready. 2. A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. They should try to help the student gain passion and curiosity for the concepts they learn. This will help them study and ace the subject. Most importantly, a tutor can encourage a love for learning that helps create the foundations of a successful student. By equipping students with the tools required to improve their…

Inside Hunters HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jess focused on factorisation, including new methods and difference of two squares, as well as extending her skills with challenging algebra questions involving expanding and simplifying.

For Year 10, Alex tackled trigonometry problems using sin, cos, and tan, alongside working through bearings questions to apply these concepts in context.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student revised calculus fundamentals such as the chain rule and product rule while also consolidating understanding of derivatives and quadratic functions through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student revising fractions often relied on memory for times tables but skipped showing steps, which made it harder to spot calculation slips—"she could perform operations in her head, but missing working out led to confusion when reviewing errors."

In Year 11, one student tackling calculus felt pressure to finish quickly and overlooked feedback about checking sign errors in exponential derivatives.

For a Year 10 learner, reading complex word problems only once meant key details were missed; as noted: "extra time was spent backtracking instead of progressing." This sometimes left them feeling stuck mid-question.

Recent Achievements

A Hunters Hill tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to hesitate on worded maths problems now chooses the correct formula without prompting and explains her reasoning aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student has shifted from getting stuck on multi-step algebra to independently checking her own work for errors and even attempting tougher factorisation questions unassisted.

In primary, one younger learner—who once waited passively—has begun taking initiative by jotting down notes and regularly asking clarifying questions whenever she's unsure.

Last session, that same student completed all assigned tasks before time was up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lane Cove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunters Hill Public School.
