Inspire them about how to think about the question and maybe, the world in a logical and rational way. As one of my lecturer once told me, "what I can teach you is not the knowledge itself, but the problem solving skills you learnt from this course". I am energetic in teaching maths and, particularly, in the interesting parts about Maths. E.g. we…

Foremost, a maths tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating…

A tutor should always analyse the strengths and weaknesses of their students. This will provide a detailed insight to the tutors on which areas to particularly focus on. Furthermore, based on the strengths and weaknesses of each student, a maths tutor can prepare a routine for the students in order to enhance their knowledge in those subjects…

First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

Teaching the students that they have the ability to achieve great grades on their own. Many of the problems that face the students is a lack of self belief. A tutor should keep the lesson informative and entertaining and ensure that the student is fully engaged. I believe it is important to create a safe space of learning. Oftentimes, students feel uncomfortable asking teachers about questions, or speaking out in front of class. Establishing your tutoring time as a space in which they can address their concerns and queries, without fear of looking stupid, is instrumental in gaining progress in learning,…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to help them build small skills which they are able to use in their lives. Just open them up to learning anything and have them not think of it as a chore. They should be excited to learn new concepts. Inside HuntingdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Dylan worked on factorisation and tackled index laws within Year 9 algebra, using "talking aloud" strategies to clarify his thinking.

Another Year 9 student revised solving linear equations and explored the difference between rational, terminating, recurring, and irrational numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alice practiced converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and calculated percentage change and error in everyday contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Algebra, skipping written steps led to frequent calculation errors—one tutor noted, "lots of middleman equations left out, which arises silly mistakes in the workings."

In senior factorisation work, missed steps undermined confidence and made it harder to spot where errors crept in.

A Year 11 student's effort with an algebra worksheet was positive, but incomplete homework limited progress between sessions.

In upper primary maths, a reluctance to write working or lay out calculations clearly made fraction and decimal problems tougher than necessary; messy setout forced extra time fixing alignment rather than understanding new methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Huntingdale noticed one high school student began tackling harder test questions independently, using graphs to work through the tough ones—something she'd hesitated with before.

Another older student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now takes time to set out every step clearly and double-checks answers for accuracy, showing real care in her process.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student made a breakthrough by finally understanding fractions after struggling for weeks; she was able to solve nearly all of the fraction questions correctly during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Huntingdale Primary School.
