Just open them up to learning anything and have them not think of it as a chore. They should be excited to learn new concepts. Students should look at tutors as friends and not as teachers so that they can come to their tutors as friends and ask for help. I love talking to my students so getting to know them on a personal level provides the…

I think encouragement as well as pushing the student to reach their full potential is extremely important. As someone who was constantly pushed to work harder during Year 12 I can guarantee you, I would not have been able to achieve the results I did without the support of my teachers and tutors. I also think targeted teaching is very important -…

I think the most important thing when tutoring someone is helping them to understand things they struggle with. I would like to be able to help students to improve while also still enjoying maths. I would like to answer two points which are very important 1. The tutor must understand the feeling of the student so as to understand where he/she is facing problem in the subjects. If you are able to remove the problem you are half way down. 2. If a tutor can make change from students' hate for the subject to love for the subject in my view is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them realise the small learning mistakes commonly made that in my opinion are not useful further in life. Namely, learning my heart or just memorising to blurt out a concept without understanding its core only to score good grades. A Tutor should be able to make the student understand…

A tutor can develop a passion of learning in a student so that a student can learn and grow even when the teacher is with the student or not. Its similar to teach a person how to fish instead giving them fish to eat. If student learn how to learn on their own, how to solve problems, and what should be the approach to a problem then it is more than…

It sounds basic but it is a common error made by tutors. Making sure that the student understands more than just how to solve the problem. Inside HuntingdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Dylan worked on factorisation and tackled index laws within Year 9 algebra, using "talking aloud" strategies to clarify his thinking.

Another Year 9 student revised solving linear equations and explored the difference between rational, terminating, recurring, and irrational numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alice practiced converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and calculated percentage change and error in everyday contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Algebra, skipping written steps led to frequent calculation errors—one tutor noted, "lots of middleman equations left out, which arises silly mistakes in the workings."

In senior factorisation work, missed steps undermined confidence and made it harder to spot where errors crept in.

A Year 11 student's effort with an algebra worksheet was positive, but incomplete homework limited progress between sessions.

In upper primary maths, a reluctance to write working or lay out calculations clearly made fraction and decimal problems tougher than necessary; messy setout forced extra time fixing alignment rather than understanding new methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Huntingdale noticed one high school student began tackling harder test questions independently, using graphs to work through the tough ones—something she'd hesitated with before.

Another older student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now takes time to set out every step clearly and double-checks answers for accuracy, showing real care in her process.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student made a breakthrough by finally understanding fractions after struggling for weeks; she was able to solve nearly all of the fraction questions correctly during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Huntingdale Primary School.
