1. Build confidence - I believe that apart from assisting the student in strengthening his/her academic knowledge, the chance for the student to feel better about themselves is also vital. This could be achieved through constant encouragement and process recognisation. 2. Provision of a positive and healthy learning environment - I believe that…

When students feel safe to learn this way, they become more engaged, motivated, and able to reach their potential. My strengths as a tutor lie in my ability to explain concepts clearly…

Having the patience and being a good listener. Having the two is what I believe where you can start building a better relationship with the student. By listening carefully to the student and also being patient with them (since people learns at different speed and different methods). From there, I can understand students in their area of weakness…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster a genuine understanding of the subject, build their confidence, and cultivate a positive attitude toward learning. It’s essential to encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills, rather than just giving answers, so they can become more independent learners.…

A tutor always have to do everything for a student to make him/her achieve their goals by being very patient and can communicate well with the students and their parents, try to find what the students lacks in and try to help in those areas. I know it might sound dramatic but a tutor could make a student what they will be in the near future a good…

As a mathematics tutor, the main aim is to remove any negative preconceived notions from students minds and spark interest in creative and involved ways. Mathematics is often associated with algorithms and arithmetic which is incorrect, students should be informed of its various applications. Learning dislike discovering what already exists, so as…

The most important things a tutor can do for their student would be investing in connection. A good tutor will take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. I think the most important thing for a tutor is to understand the type of support needed. Some students require more explanation whereas other students prefer to work with problems to understand what and how they should apply themselves and what they have learnt. This also may change for different topics with the same student; it's about trying…

The most important thing is to be patient and understanding of the student. I believe that in order to teach efficiently, those two core values must be practiced first for the student to truly engage and advance in the learning material. Contrastingly, in a practical sense, the most important thing we can do is to ensure the student understands…

Give time to the student. Clear doubts if any in their mind. I believe in hierarchical learning of a concept. By breaking the tougher questions into small easier parts, student can understand it better First and…

Inside HuntingdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Dylan worked on factorisation and tackled index laws within Year 9 algebra, using "talking aloud" strategies to clarify his thinking.

Another Year 9 student revised solving linear equations and explored the difference between rational, terminating, recurring, and irrational numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alice practiced converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and calculated percentage change and error in everyday contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Algebra, skipping written steps led to frequent calculation errors—one tutor noted, "lots of middleman equations left out, which arises silly mistakes in the workings."

In senior factorisation work, missed steps undermined confidence and made it harder to spot where errors crept in.

A Year 11 student's effort with an algebra worksheet was positive, but incomplete homework limited progress between sessions.

In upper primary maths, a reluctance to write working or lay out calculations clearly made fraction and decimal problems tougher than necessary; messy setout forced extra time fixing alignment rather than understanding new methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Huntingdale noticed one high school student began tackling harder test questions independently, using graphs to work through the tough ones—something she'd hesitated with before.

Another older student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now takes time to set out every step clearly and double-checks answers for accuracy, showing real care in her process.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student made a breakthrough by finally understanding fractions after struggling for weeks; she was able to solve nearly all of the fraction questions correctly during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Huntingdale Primary School.
