Above all else, I think a tutor can give a student confidence in whatever work students have due. Once their confidence is built up, they will respond better to not just tutoring outside, but also teaching in the classroom and result to a deeper understanding of the content. I think I am well versed in most subjects, and am an excellent…

I think a good tutor needs to be patient with the student. There are times that the teaching process does not go as smoothly as planned but listening helps better understand the student as well as his point of view. I have my own teaching plan and note for every student. I find myself good at spotting main points that student should focus on and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor must do for a student is to really take time to listen to and understand the areas that they are struggling with so that they are not giving up valuable out of school time and not making progress - I firmly believe that play and rest is just as important as studying and working when you are a primary and…

Sometimes its difficult to read what is going inside a students head and maybe student says he/she understands the subject but in reality they are just shy to ask questions As a tutor I can have some informal tests to see whether the student is understanding. A good tutor should always focus on qualitative approach rather than quantitative…

This involves not just explaining concepts clearly but also fostering critical thinking skills, encouraging self-confidence, and providing strategies for problem-solving and time management. The most important thing the tutor can do is create a safe trustworthy environment. The student should feel that the tutoring lessons are a session where they are allowed to make mistakes, as mistakes are crucial in the process of learning. The tutor should make is to make the lessons actually interactive and reasonably challenging for the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for the student. Unlike a teacher, the tutor has the luxury of being able to pace shift, and cater to the individual. Thus, taking absolute advantage of this 'power' is of the utmost importance, making sure that you, as a tutor, are meeting the needs of your student. I believe my strengths are…

A tutor is a person that can add on to the knowledge that the student learns in school. If a student is coming for tutor it most likely means that he/she is struggling with either the topic in general or the method of teaching in school. As a tutor I will ensure that I will go at a pace that is manageable for the student, as there is no use…

A tutor should not just solve a question for a student, rather they need to supply the foundations and processes that allow a question to be broken down and solved easily. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in their learning abilities. I have found that most students have no problems in actually learning the material itself, but rather have low self-esteem in themselves which negatively impacts their learning. Once you show them that they can do the work, it…

Inside HuntingdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Dylan worked on factorisation and tackled index laws within Year 9 algebra, using "talking aloud" strategies to clarify his thinking.

Another Year 9 student revised solving linear equations and explored the difference between rational, terminating, recurring, and irrational numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alice practiced converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and calculated percentage change and error in everyday contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Algebra, skipping written steps led to frequent calculation errors—one tutor noted, "lots of middleman equations left out, which arises silly mistakes in the workings."

In senior factorisation work, missed steps undermined confidence and made it harder to spot where errors crept in.

A Year 11 student's effort with an algebra worksheet was positive, but incomplete homework limited progress between sessions.

In upper primary maths, a reluctance to write working or lay out calculations clearly made fraction and decimal problems tougher than necessary; messy setout forced extra time fixing alignment rather than understanding new methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Huntingdale noticed one high school student began tackling harder test questions independently, using graphs to work through the tough ones—something she'd hesitated with before.

Another older student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now takes time to set out every step clearly and double-checks answers for accuracy, showing real care in her process.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student made a breakthrough by finally understanding fractions after struggling for weeks; she was able to solve nearly all of the fraction questions correctly during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Huntingdale Primary School.
