Able to not only teach relevant school topics, but as well as life skills and organisation skills. Bringing out a student's full potential is important from a tutor's perspective. Being able to communicate effectively at their own pace, until a solid grasp of understanding is achieved. Providing thorough explanation for any misunderstandings a…

Tutor's provide an opportunity for individualised, one-on-one support in a way that the standard classroom cannot offer. This provides more in-depth and responsive support for students to consolidate and expand learning. I am able to creatively explain new concepts and connect to what students have previously learned. I like to be patient and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, help them truly understand topics, and create a supportive space where they feel comfortable asking questions. My strengths as a tutor include explaining complex ideas in simple, clear ways and adapting my approach to fit each learner's needs. I'm patient, a good…

Personally, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is change their perspective regarding their weak subjects, Mathematics in particular has always been a favorite of mine yet I have had students who used to start sweating whenever we pulled out the textbook. However, once they realized that Mathematics can actually be quite fun, their…

To engage their student in what they are being taught. Often, it is easy for tutors to treat teaching as a rote-memory recitation of their materials, without actually using other analogies and connective methods that students benefit from. If a tutor is unwilling to invest energy into their lessons, a student likewise will gain little enrichment.…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. Learning really happens when students feel safe to try, even if they don’t get it right the first time. A tutor should also explain things in a way that makes sense to…

I find it important for tutors to be able to make a student comfortable to ask them questions and to give wrong answers. The most important way we learn is through seeing our failures and determining what we can do better the next time. Without being able to acknowledge their own mistakes and see how they can do better, students will not be able…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them and remind them of their potential. It is also necessary to give students personalised advice to ensure they target their time and energy in the right tasks, especially in…

Genuinely understanding the students need and tailoring the best approach of teaching accordingly is the best thing a tutor can do. The most important thing a teacher can teach a student is something about how they learn best, like what techniques, environements, etc. they need to learn effectively. This is not only a skill that will help them any time they need to learn something in the future, but also something that will help them enjoy the process. I think I have excellent…

My son has recently started maths tutoring. His tutor is great and has helped my son to improve quickly. We're currently doing the tutoring online during the pandemic which is working really well. Highly recommended.

Inside Hurlstone ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ivy focused on revising operations with positive and negative numbers and addition of fractions with different denominators, including converting improper fractions to mixed numerals.

In Year 8, Lewis tackled trigonometric ratios for finding unknown side lengths in right-angled triangles and worked through index laws using examples from a recent test.

For Year 9, sessions included expanding and factorising algebraic expressions using the distributive law and working through financial mathematics topics such as simple interest and depreciation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, when working on trigonometry, often avoided writing out steps for rearranging equations—"he tries to solve it in his head and skips lines," a tutor observed. This made small errors hard to find, especially with negative numbers.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner struggled with times tables and would hesitate before attempting more complex fraction problems; forgotten multiplication facts slowed her progress on simplifying fractions.

In Year 10 financial maths, one student left questions incomplete because they were unsure whether to calculate interest or total amounts—this uncertainty led to confusion during timed tests.

Recent Achievements

A Hurlstone Park tutor recently noticed Lewis, a high school student, catching and correcting his own errors while working through complex algebraic expressions—a big shift from earlier sessions where he'd wait for hints.

Another highlight came when Ruby, also in high school, confidently explained how different transformations affect the sketching of parabolas and interpreted Venn diagrams with minimal guidance after previously needing step-by-step support.

For a younger student, Ivy's willingness to ask clarifying questions during her lesson stood out; she used to quietly move on if she was unsure but now actively seeks understanding before continuing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School.
