The most important thing, according to me, is that the tutor is able to sympathise with the student. More often, in a class full of people, a student can feel like they're the only one who's falling behind. A tutor can help the student get out of that sort of thinking, and personally, at a one-on-one level, be involved in helping the student out…

The first and foremost thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand where the student is lacking behind or where is the student going wrong. Secondly, the tutor needs to build a good rapport with his student which will build the students trust and confidence which will help the tutor to communicate better with his student. Thirdly, a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is that they have the drive and the patience for them until they learn. The whole point of why we tutor kids is for them to learn and apply what they know. You also need to love the student and take care of them as a mother does to their kids. My strengths as a tutor are: - I have patience…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is provide a supportive and encouraging learning environment. A tutor should help students feel comfortable asking questions, adapt their teaching to students' needs, and make learning feel more approachable. I also believe its important to help students develop a strong understanding of concepts so…

The most important thing any sort of teacher or mentor can do for not just students, but anyone, is to make sure the students believe in themselves and their abilities, for that will take them beyond any test or assignment. What is also important is to make sure the students have fun while learning, for that will ensure that whatever they are…

I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

A tutor is there to build confidence, in my opinion. Regardless of the comments of parents, teachers, siblings, a tutor should believe in their students and empower them to perform at the highest level capable. That is what the best tutors achieved for me, and what I continue to do for my own students today. I think the best tutors, particularly…

The most important thing is to gain a core understanding of the topic, and not just a surface level rote learning of how to solve problems. It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). A believe an effective tutor will support a student in a way that will eventually leave them comfortable, confident and prepared enough to no longer need the help of a tutor. The most important thing a tutor can impart to her/his student is the ability to motivate. If you ask me, simplifying the concepts is the major task for a tutor. Just not the concepts but individual attention to the weaknesses and elimination of the same is a must to be a good tutor. Simplification of concepts and integration of the concept with real-world problems so that the learner could relate and understand the application of the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

A tutor can engage the mind of a child and develop a love for the subject within the child. Education has the power to broaden horizons and inculcate a sense of satisfaction which I believe can be brought in by the help of a tutor. Being able to communicate at a level that the child understands is a must. As a tutor, you must be able to build a…

Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
