I believe that cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset are important. A tutor should inspire curiosity, instill confidence, and equip students with the tools they need to become independent learners. Moreover, fostering a positive and supportive relationship built on trust and mutual respect is…

In my opinion, the first thing a tutor can do to help a student is to first listen to them and take their concerns very seriously. It may be a very simple doubt, but the moment they accept that we are ready to listen to their concerns, we automatically grab their attention and build up a rapport with them. Another critical aspect of tutoring is to…

A tutor should give them the tools and the confidence to tackle any problem in the subject area. This means that the student should gain the skills to solve any problem in the subject area. To enable this level of learning, the tutor must be knowledgeable in the subject and well-prepared for each lesson. I have previous experience working as a…

Be honest. This helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. Be flexible. This means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the student. Be patient. What is obvious or easy for you may not be so for your student. Learn not to show annoyance…

A tutor, i believe, “should†(rather than just “canâ€) keep the learner relaxed. They should ensure that the learner fully understands every concept in stages (what i like to call ‘staged implementation’). I also believe that a tutor should go through the basics thoroughly before jumping into potentially more complex…

Be there for the student as their base. Confidence is key in a student's learning and just being a reliable and safe zone for the student gives them the first push needed to get going. I am very good at breaking each problem down to very simple steps that seem very achievable for the student and I am very good at building confidence in the student…

I think the most important thing is to guide them to find their own methods to solve problems and help them build up strategies. As a result, they can recognise different modules and use appropriate methods. I am approachable and I can guide students to the answers instead of providing them answers directly. The most important thing, according to me, is that the tutor is able to sympathise with the student. More often, in a class full of people, a student can feel like they're the only one who's falling behind. A tutor can help the student get out of that sort of thinking, and personally, at a one-on-one level, be involved in helping the student out…

Everyone can learn and reach his best. By being a tutor, I can help a student to grow by creating learning methods suit to his condition and develop the student's competencies. Flexibility in teaching style is one of the key aspects of effective learning of student. Depending on the student performance, a tutor changes his techniques and approaches to enhance learning of student. A tutor must be a good listener, which can help to understand student's doubts. Being patient while teaching is also important. A tutor must…

A tutor should make the student feel comfortable about admitting the lessons that the student really doesn't understand, and eventually make that student feel confident by equipping her/him with methods to break down and analyse the problem in digestible steps. I firmly believe a tutor should not spoon feed a student; instead, let him/her attempt…

Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
