I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand and support them. A student excelling in their studies is not simply a routine of worksheets and practice essays, but learning simple yet effective methods for studying such as flash cards, mind maps and games. It also goes beyond studying and into routines students can…

Tutors should help students realise their full potential and aim to develop their skills. Tutors should also create a personalised learning plan for the learner to help tackle any misconceptions or weaknesses. I can make informed and evidence-based judgments on students' abilities and skills to create a learning plan catering to their individual…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

One of the vital things a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with inspiration so that they can set out to achieve their academic goals. I speak with experience on this because during my high school my maths tutor provided me with the inspiration to do well in my academics. In addition, having a positive impact on a student's life is a…

Most importantly, putting time and efforts after students till their basics are clear is the key for a tutor to use. After clearing the basics, revising and revisiting the already done work is equally important. Having had experience in tutoring, patience is my strength. I think self motivation and hard work are the key to success while mentoring…

Firstly, I believe that a tutor should always encourage their students. Through encouragement, the students can feel a sense of self-achievement and personal growth. This would hence encourage students to try their best and feel more motivated in their studies. Moreover, I believe a tutor should know each student’s personal learning style and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being flexible. A tutor must be able to accommodate the strengths and weaknesses of their students, and this means having a wide range of strategies and methods to help students. Tutors must also be able to think on their feet, and be prepared for any queries and questions their students may…

Helping develop adaptability and time-management skills. Encouraging independent and critical thinking. Improving a student's overall attitude towards…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is to know what not to do.Never should a tutor discourage any participation or disapprove of the theories initiated by the student. The most important task of a tutor is to first introduce the student to the student then indulge in activities and quiz for the participation of the students followed by…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? I believe I am very clear and concise with what I teach, and that because of my openly…

In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is listen patiently to the student, guide them in the right direction, build trust, encourage, and support to drive to excellence. I would consider my strength to be that firstly, I establish a rapport with the children which makes them feel comfortable and in a friendly environment. Then I try…

Instead of just focusing on one method that only appeals to a single learning style, varying teaching techniques can cater your lessons to different learning styles. Students will be more successful…

I feel the most important thing for any tutor is to be able to communicate with its student effectively. A tutor should not make an assumption that just because students do not have any questions, they are understanding the topic. It is important to go around the class and ask questions individually to check on the understanding. Teaching has…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

I think a tutor is a map for the pathway of the student's success. The tutor will do all within their limit to make sure they have given enough importance to the student to excel. This includes the peripheral knowledge that a student should have surrounding the content/topic - which means what is the purpose of learning/ how is it going to help…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

In the past, I have dealt with tough students with patience and empathy, clearing my students’ doubts and making them gain an in – depth understanding of the subject. Understand the student's way of thinking. Every student deserves attention from a tutor to channel their thoughts in the right direction. I can relate with younger minds easily and understand the problems that they face…

Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
