A tutor must teach the underlying concepts and "why things work" rather than just "how things work". A good tutor is much more than just a problem solver. Good tutor builds capability in students to actually use what they learnt to solve and analyze complex real world problems. Strong background and grasp of the subject in question. Currently a…

I think tutors have to have the appropriate amount of empathy to understand, not only the way they learn, but also their reason for learning. Best thing tutor can do is align his values with his student's. I think this is a way to frustrate and alienate him. I can approach a problem the way student does. This gives me an insight into where they…

The most important thing is that the teacher makes the student realize the importance of learning all these things and how they could apply it to their real life. I think my strengths is that i see teaching as a performance rather than just a boring classroom setting. I believe that keeping the student engaged in the experience is crucial to…

The two most important things a tutor can do for a student is help with accountability and develop understanding of deeper ideas that students may not have knowledge in. Accountability means being an external party that can help make sure a student feels obliged to study and improve, and developing understanding means students can specialise their…

To promote interest and skills in the topic they are studying. They should also teach the student how to access and find knowledge that they may require. In the current world, information is easy to find and access. Skills are something that must be learned and cannot be found via a web search. I care about the understanding of the student and…

The most important thing i can do for a student is to be the students' friend not tutor. This can by achieved by initiating and having a talk with them to understand how do they think and react to different situations. This usually makes a student more comfortable and life-loving. Raising up the student spirits and confidence about himself and…

As a tutor we should ensure that student enjoy learning, participate in discussion with confidence and ask questions when not clear about anything. As a tutor we should try to explain things clearly and explain it until students indicates that he or she understands the topic before we moving on to new topics. I think the most important things that a tutor can do is to instil in students the drive to learn more about a subject, fix any misconceptions they may have, and to make them feel comfortable enough to ask any questions they have. I think my strengths come from finding gaps in a student’s knowledge and using appropriate measures to rectify them.…

Inside Ivanhoe EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mitch worked on planning and editing a creative writing short story, focusing on making his writing style more engaging and refining tense and characterisation.

For Year 11 Chemistry, Lucy reviewed types of chemical bonds—covalent, ionic, hydrogen—and practised identifying polarity in molecules.

Meanwhile, Year 12 English student Sam analysed persuasive techniques in VCAA argument analysis exams, comparing tone and arguments across sample articles and practising structured essay plans using CCCTAP methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete a short story over the break, meaning lesson time was spent planning instead of giving feedback on writing.

In VCE English, one student had difficulty drawing out meaning in terms of film techniques for 'On the Waterfront,' and hesitated to share ideas despite good insights.

A Year 8 maths student sometimes jumped to conclusions before reading questions carefully—this led to avoidable errors when interpreting worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student left assigned homework unfinished and struggled to recall times tables quickly during practice, making it harder to keep up with new content in sessions.

Recent Achievements

During one Ivanhoe East tutoring session, a Year 10 student shifted from waiting for hints to tackling analysis questions independently. This showed new persistence in breaking down film themes before asking for help.

In VCE English, another student who previously hesitated to use evidence began actively selecting and justifying quotes in essays without tutor prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once made frequent "silly mistakes" on times tables started working more neatly and self-checking answers out loud, recently scoring full marks on her 3s and 4s.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe East Primary School-Wilfred Road Campus.
