Tutoring is the heart of learning. Building a strong relationship with students and focus on students interest during the teaching time could be the most important thing a physics tutor can do. I have invested most of my time in learning new skills and developing my scientific knowledge. I learned high level mathematics at University and achieve…

Listening. I think the best thing a physics tutor/mentor can do is listen to their students to find out which subjects/areas that need to be focused on. Anyone can teach the syllabus but a great tutor will produce a study plan suited to each individual student which will help bring best out of them. studying at RMIT has helped further broaden my…

Throughout my academic life my teachers and tutors and their passion for learning has sparked my own. Through this experience, I have realised that a physics tutor must be truly passionate about the subject that they are teaching and care for the students and their future as if it was their own. Even if a teacher was highly experienced in a…

I think the most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to provide the opportunity for the student to realize that they are capable of understanding complex concepts. This will allow students to become further motivated and strive for greater results I think my main strength is my patience. I believe i am a very patient person,…

Establish their confidence to solve the questions independently. That doesn't mean you don't help when they are stuck. I will provide time for my students to try before I go through the questions under time limit. I have a solid understanding of the Yr11 and 12 maths knowledge. I know the typical exam standard questions, and where people usually…

In my opinion, the most important quality of a physics tutor is flexibility. While the concepts are the same, our teaching methods, the way we deliver it to each students differs. We need to cater for each student's need and ability. The ultimate goal is to inspire the students and initiate them to challenge themselves. Since I've once struggled…

To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. You know, the most crucial things a physics tutor can do for a student boil down to creating a chill and comfy learning vibe. It's like making them feel they can ask anything without hesitation. Then comes the personalized magic – tailoring stuff to their style. And let's not forget the confidence boost – helping them see they've got this!…

I think that a physics tutor should be able to meet the individual needs of a student and present the content in an easily understandable format for them especially in the field of mathematics where there are often multiple pathways to achieving an answer. The most important thing in tutoring in my opinion is to understand your audiences and customise your approach based on that. in order to be an effective tutor, someone needs to connect to their students. The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. Anthony, Balwyn North

Inside Ivanhoe EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mitch worked on planning and editing a creative writing short story, focusing on making his writing style more engaging and refining tense and characterisation.

For Year 11 Chemistry, Lucy reviewed types of chemical bonds—covalent, ionic, hydrogen—and practised identifying polarity in molecules.

Meanwhile, Year 12 English student Sam analysed persuasive techniques in VCAA argument analysis exams, comparing tone and arguments across sample articles and practising structured essay plans using CCCTAP methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete a short story over the break, meaning lesson time was spent planning instead of giving feedback on writing.

In VCE English, one student had difficulty drawing out meaning in terms of film techniques for 'On the Waterfront,' and hesitated to share ideas despite good insights.

A Year 8 maths student sometimes jumped to conclusions before reading questions carefully—this led to avoidable errors when interpreting worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student left assigned homework unfinished and struggled to recall times tables quickly during practice, making it harder to keep up with new content in sessions.

Recent Achievements

During one Ivanhoe East tutoring session, a Year 10 student shifted from waiting for hints to tackling analysis questions independently. This showed new persistence in breaking down film themes before asking for help.

In VCE English, another student who previously hesitated to use evidence began actively selecting and justifying quotes in essays without tutor prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once made frequent "silly mistakes" on times tables started working more neatly and self-checking answers out loud, recently scoring full marks on her 3s and 4s.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Georgette, Luiz's tutor is amazing and we would like her to continue if possible over the school summer holidays.

Lauren has only had a couple of sessions with Nirvan but the benefits were instant & she has really valued his tutoring which has given her more confidence in her capabilities as well. Nirvan seems an exceptional young man & his polite manner & tutoring style are a credit to him. We have been very pleased with the quality, prompt & ease of arrangements & would like to utilise your services again next year.

So far we are pretty happy with Daniel and his enthusiastic and focused approach. I think Cleo feels very comfortable with him and he has been able to help her manage her work load and advancing slowly to re gain her confidence. He has a lovely mature manner, a very likeable guy.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe East Primary School-Wilfred Road Campus.
