I believe the most important thing is to be well-prepared ahead of the session and have good knowledge of the subject. In addition to these, the tutor must be empathetic to the child's needs, effectively communicate and also tailor the teaching methods as every student is different and has varied learning needs and capabilities. This will also…

Personalized instruction, tailored to individual learning styles and needs, is paramount, as is fostering a student's confidence through positive reinforcement and celebrating progress. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide personalised support. Every student is unique, with individual learning styles, strengths, and challenges. A tutor should take time to understand the student's specific needs, tailor their approach to match the student's learning styles and provide targeted assistance…

A tutor can help develop a student in a good personality. He/she can understand where a student lags and help them to improve on those aspects thereby assisting him to become what he wants to in life. A tutor plays a real important role in students development. I am very patient and understand that not all the students may understand after…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make an overall postive impact. Just being an academic support for a student who is struggling can create impacts more meaningful than grades or results. Helping them change their attitude towards learning is the kind of positive change that lasts beyond the classroom. I am a really positive and…

To teach students the foundation for greater and more difficult topics they have to face in the future. As well as this, providing them with a person they feel comfortable asking what they might think a 'silly' question could be. I think I strive on being able to listen to student's opinions and make my method of teaching as clear as possible. I…

A tutor is not responsible for not passing the exam only, rather he needs to guide the student toward a better future for the student & a wellbeing for the society. I believe that "The teacher is the backbone of the nation". I can understand whether the student really understood or not. "Quality study" is more important than "Quantity study",…

Ensuring your student is feeling comfortable and confident to try new things is paramount. A student needs to understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process. Motivation and understanding the learning need of a student. Most of these students come because they are either challenged or want to be ahead of the game in class. Motivation is one of the core soft skills a tutor should have. Without it and an understanding of how a student effectively learns, all of the tutor's knowledge is in vain. I’m an…

To me, a tutor can make learning real, relevant and interesting.Tutor can make learning relevant to students's interest which in itself is half the battle won as research has proved that one learns things quickly if those aligns to one's interest. For e.g., a student who like solving maths puzzles will quickly learn new formulas and other things…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student it be approachable. Inside JacanaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mary worked on adding fractions with different denominators and tackled factors and multiples, finishing a tricky homework sheet together.

Year 8 student Bill focused on reducing fractions through targeted practice and discussed division in relation to multiplication, using examples from recent lessons.

For Year 9, Alex revised multiplying and dividing negative numbers, including a spelling test and vocabulary worksheet for literacy reinforcement within the session.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left English essays incomplete for homework, particularly after receiving a disappointing mark; as noted, "he seemed distressed and avoided starting the next essay," which led to missed opportunities for feedback and improvement.

In Year 7 Maths, another student consistently forgot to complete assigned revision sheets before a fractions test—this meant class time was spent on catch-up rather than tackling new material.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preferred to attempt only familiar problems in algebra revision, shying away from more challenging questions and limiting exposure to essential concepts needed for exam readiness.

Recent Achievements

One Jacana tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he openly voices questions when stuck on essay planning and even suggests what he'd like to review next.

A high schooler tackling long division had previously needed lots of guidance but can now finish complex worded problems independently after practicing with homework.

In a primary session, a Year 4 student who once got frustrated by spelling mistakes now takes them in stride and finishes tests with far fewer corrections, even celebrating when he spelled most tricky words right.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Basketball Broadmeadows.
