A tutor is not there to do a student's homework for them but rather to help them think and problem solve in new ways so that they can complete their work more effectively and be a more independent learner. Thus, a tutor can help by bringing with themselves a large amount of knowledge in the subject area(s) and by having a patient and understanding…

It's important for the tutor to believe in the students capabilities. When a student has somebody there to be encouraging and reassuring, they are able to be in a better mind set for learning which can accelerate the time it takes to improve academic success. I consider myself to be extremely patient which is especially valuable with younger…

Tutors are useful in the way that if a student didn’t understand how something was explained in class, we can offer different and more in depth explanations to help them achieve this understanding. Ensuring a student feels comfortable enough to ask questions is the most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion. That I am supportive, positive…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to be a constant supporting presence and to increase their confidence in their own knowledge and skills. From my experience as a high school and uni tutor, I observed many students who did not struggle with the concepts they were being taught but instead struggled with…

I think tutoring is so much more than just helping a student improve their maths or science skills. It’s about building up motivation and self-confidence, and teaching students valuable skills they can apply to their learning later in life. For example: identifying what they are struggling to understand, asking questions confidently, and coming…

A tutor, first and foremost, must ensure that a student is improving their grades, that is why people look for tutors in the first place. However, as well as this, a really good tutor can instil a genuine love of a given subject. This will also greatly assist in improving the student's performance. Thus the most important thing a tutor can do is…

I believe a tutor must have an enthusiastic attitude when they teach, and hopefully inspire the student to enjoy what they’re learning, and inspire them to want to learn more. I believe the way a concept is framed is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. My Year 11 and 12 Maths Teacher, Mr Rocks, would always explain to our class how different people's brains work in different ways (e.g. geometrically, analytically) so while one concept might make a lot of sense to the tutor/teacher, the way…

Additionally, teachers have to be truly dedicated especially in terms of correction of homework and assignments. Listening to their needs and their struggles is vital to finding a way for them to enjoy school and the subject. You need to be able to push the student but in a way that helps them to achieve something they're proud of. Pushing them for results is usually only going to increase their frustration and dislike for school/learning. Tutors are in a…

Inside JerrabomberraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ari focused on statistics by practicing mean, median, mode, and range calculations as well as creating box-and-whisker plots and interpreting outliers.

In Year 9, Noah worked through essay planning for English, including developing thesis statements and topic sentences for an analytical essay on Tim O'Brien's novel 'The Things They Carried', and also practiced writing vignettes inspired by the text.

For Year 3, Josh completed basic addition exercises using number lines and jump counting, then moved to addition with counters to reinforce mental arithmetic strategies.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, one student deleted an entire essay after a teacher requested a new format but did not respond to feedback emails or submit drafts for review—this reluctance to share work limited editing opportunities before the extended due date.

A Year 9 student "forgot to bring his homework" for two consecutive lessons, meaning time was lost revisiting previous tasks rather than progressing with new content.

In primary maths, a Year 4 student's written work remained messy and steps were skipped when solving problems involving area and perimeter; as one tutor observed, "he needs to be neater in his presentation of work."

Recent Achievements

One Jerrabomberra tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled with essay structure now taking the initiative to email their thesis drafts and questions between lessons, leading to much clearer arguments in their writing.

In Year 8 maths, another student, after hesitating to ask for help before, has started openly discussing confusing problems—he's now working through linear equations step by step rather than skipping tricky parts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once rushed reading tasks is now pausing to make predictions about story outcomes before moving on, showing more thoughtful engagement with texts.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thanks for following up.  Daniel has been fantastic and we appreciate his diligence.

The tutoring is going great! Brody really enjoys his time with Daryl and his grade has improved greatly. He got an A on his assessment today and the last time he spoke with his teacher his grade had increased from a D to a C.

Andrew had his last week with Cameron this Saturday, Cameron has been an excellent tutor, he is very tuned in to maths specialist, and has helped Andrew greatly in his learning.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Jerrabomberra High School.
