The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to help them feel supported and encouraged. This means teaching in a way that makes sense to them and giving them helpful feedback. It's also important to boost their confidence so they believe in themselves and stay motivated to learn. Creating a friendly and open environment where they…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is patience and keep great confident about your students, since sometime when they cannot understand the course materials very quickly, the tutors cannot rush them or blame them or being negative. Keep great confident for your students, trust them, and go over the materials more…

In my current study, the most important skills are independent learning and peer teaching. I aim to teach students how to identify their gaps and where to look, whether Google or Youtube or books or teachers. I will teach students study skills like note taking or flashcard techniques. In the end, my goal will be to make the student the expert and…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. Frustration in their own learning can often end up being the reason why a concept is not being understood. I was an inclusion support assistant at a primary school, working with various kids with learning difficulties and disabilities. This has given me…

From my point of view, inspiring student motivation for learning and helping the student become an independent learner are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. When a tutor embodies passion for learning, students are more likely to have a positive emotional connection to learning. And in this way will inspire their motivation to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them to understand that the concepts and techniques they are learning are much less frightening and overwhelming when they are boiled down and simplified into manageable components. When tackling a problem, the more aspects we don't understand, the more likely we are to panic and deem…

I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to be positive and encourage students at all times. When I received tutoring in high school the most effective way in which I learnt was to be encouraged to try the question even if I had no idea how to do it. A tutor should be able to consider the wants and needs of the student, as well as keeping a steadily growing pace in terms of learning content. If a student is lacking in a specific area, the tutor should be able to recognise that and determine or formulate content plans to help mitigate that. I believe any and every student should learn and…

As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. One of the most important things a tutor can do is help students see the significance and practicality of the concepts they are learning. Jocelyn, Jindalee

Inside JindaleeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lily focused on converting between millimetres, centimetres, and metres and practised measurement problems involving unit changes.

For Year 10, James worked through sketching quadratic functions using turning points and factored form, along with solving quadratics by factorisation and the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Olivia tackled derivatives of polynomial and non-polynomial functions as part of her PSMT assignment, also discussing how to structure each sub-heading for clear assignment presentation.

Recent Challenges

Forgetting to bring the school homework book home repeatedly in Year 7 meant missing vital practice and made it hard to pinpoint specific struggles.

A Year 10 student had not completed assigned homework and often could not recall classwork details. "Writing any questions in a separate book and bringing them home should help solidify understanding," noted one tutor.

For Year 12, missing regular revision led to gaps in applying formulas during functions tasks; over-reliance on the graphics calculator limited confidence with graph plotting by hand. This left key skills unpracticed when needed most.

Recent Achievements

One Jindalee tutor saw a big shift in a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask questions—now, he's speaking up whenever unsure and requests to go over tricky concepts again.

In another session, a Year 10 student took real ownership of her chemistry work: after the first question was explained, she completed the next two independently with only light guidance and then tackled later problems entirely on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who often guessed answers now labels all her maths work neatly and double-checks for errors before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Ommaney Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Jindalee State School.
