Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be giving them motivation and support. As a tutor we can help build the students confidence in their academic abilities. We can also effectively equip students with valuable study skills that's applicable in all their future studies. Lastly, learning can be challenging, so as…

I think a welcoming environment is a key aspect to tutoring. I want to have a personal connection with each student. This makes the students want to engage more and helps learning become more enjoyable and also more rewarding. My strengths would include being friendly so that asking questions and making mistakes is a positive thing and part of the…

There are some important things a tutor can do for a student. The first one is clear communication. Secondly, being patient to students is also very important. Last but not least, providing a relatively easier way to solve the problem is important too. There are some strengths of me as a tutor. I am patient. I leave some time for students to…

To be able to identify the students strengths and weaknesses before coming up with a teaching method that is suitable to their most preferred way of learning and the way of learning that they would be able to benefit most from. Additionally, making sure the student is comfortable enough to share what they do not understand or to feedback on what…

A tutor should know the student's learning style well and be able to cater to their needs. A tutor should also provide a strong foundation to the subjects so that students can build upon this foundation and practice and get better in the future. A tutor should also build good, consistent study habits in the student, and build up the student's…

Confidence. A great tutor doesn't just teach the subject, they help the student believe they can master it. That shift in mindset is what drives real progress. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is my ability to explain complex ideas in a simple, clear way. Because I'm studying mechanical engineering, I had to learn how to break down difficult…

I think the most important thing is patience as not all students are fast learner. Sometimes repetition is needed in tutoring and we need to stay calm and cool while explaining it repeatedly. Also, communication skills are essential. A good tutor knows how to deliver the subject so that it is easy to be understood by the student. 1. Patience 2.…

According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be a good listener. It is very important to know and understand why a student is facing a problem in a particular situation so that it can be tackled. The tutor should also be compassionate and patient toward the student and should be able to adapt themselves as per the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have patience. Understanding that each student is different and that it's necessary to adapt to their pace in order to achieve results. It is important for tutors to explain the concept in a way that gives the student true understanding rather than just a shortcut for test questions. This way the student can apply that knowledge to different situations. I've tutored my younger siblings throughout school so I'm good at working with kids who like to complain that it's too hard. I'm…

A tutor needs to have a good understanding of the content to help cater to the students' needs. By suggesting or providing different resources (e.g. alternative text books, handouts, video clips or study cards), the student can widen their methods of learning and access to resources. A tutor needs to be a relatable individual, who gets along…

Inside KarrakattaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Michael practised simplifying and comparing fractions, then applied these skills to converting between decimals and percentages.

In Year 10, Sarah focused on quadratic equations by converting from general form to turning point form and identifying roots and axes of symmetry using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex tackled linear and non-linear relationships by interpreting graphs and equations from real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided writing out full working in algebra and index notation questions; as one tutor observed, "mistakes were made due to lack of working out," which led to hidden errors that slowed progress during review.

In Year 11 physics, over-reliance on the equation sheet was noted—Chris needed more familiarity with deriving formulas independently rather than searching for answers, especially under time pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with reading worded problems closely; skipping key details resulted in incomplete answers on circumference and probability tasks.

During practice exams, several students lost marks due to poor time management and not checking their responses before moving on.

Recent Achievements

One Karrakatta tutoring session saw a Year 11 student, Chris, move from avoiding challenging physics questions to working through them independently and even explaining his thinking out loud—a real turnaround from early lessons where he'd hesitate or stay quiet.

In Year 10, Mitchell has stopped skipping steps in his maths working; instead of trying to solve everything mentally (and making errors), he now writes out each stage clearly and checks his answers.

For a younger student, Antonio's focus has improved noticeably—he stayed engaged for the full lesson and was quick to spot tricky parts in mental maths problems that used to trip him up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hollywood Primary School.
