The most important thing an english tutor can do is to build up a student's self belief so they can continue improving and reach their goals, whether they be academic or not. Tutoring is about giving a student the space they need to make mistakes, and teaching them that it is okay to make them. It is important that a student and tutor can build…

I think an english tutor needs to be patient and easy going in a way that students can be comfortable with, and question things they feel unable to question in their school classroom. I think tutors need to teach their students the importance of practice and resilience, especially in VCE. English is a subject which takes lots of practice and…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that an english tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen…

Building confidence in students is so important to aid in them becoming the best learner they can be. I am understanding and patient. I have been inspired by educators who encourage their students' learning and find different ways to teach the same concepts. For students who struggle, helping them understand basic/intermediate concepts is a big step. Getting quality responses and correct answers by themselves builds confidence in student learning, and creates positive feedback…

Develop a good rapport with the student so they are open to expressing their fears/weaknesses. Where the student does not open us, assess exactly which area the student needs help in and focus their energy there. I develop professional relationships with pupils quite easily, and that helps break the ice. They are more open to receiving coaching. I…

The most important things an english tutor can do are build confidence, make learning feel manageable, and create a safe space where students are not afraid to make mistakes. A tutor can show a student why instead of just how. Students step into academics and are shown what to do and how to do it, but they don't understand why until much later on in life. A tutor is in a way a parent, trying to teach their child. Essentially, their future depends on how well they have been prepared, no matter how small the…

The most important thing I can do for a student is build their confidence in their learning. By the time I have finished a term (or 2) with my student's, they are more confident, more intuitive and approach their work with excitement. Additionally, I will provide the necessary tools for a student to carry on to their further studies. If you're a…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. That's why, as a tutor, I would do my very best to be friendly and comfortable with the student, and make sure they can enjoy…

First things is to make them feel comfortable so that they can so their doubts. Next, understand the prior knowledge of a student and then give examples on the problems based on that. It helps them to understand various concepts easily and they start building interest in studies. Lastly, try to make education interesting for them! My main…

Ensuring that students aren't afraid to ask for help. It's vital that tutors reinforce the fact that we are there to help them and won't care at all if they make mistakes and that it's a necessary part of the learning process. This not only helps build a sense of rapport with the student, but it promotes efficient and effective learning. I think…

Making sure that the student is comfortable and not to push them so soon into the problems and questions - ease them into the subject. If they are already "good" at the subject, then it comes down to being there to cultivate their skill with them. Ensuring the students understand first, then applying the fundamentals. I am a big advocate for…

I have experienced firsthand the difference an english tutor can make on a child's enthusiasm and engagement with a subject, and I want to pass that onto the next generation of kids. Above all, I believe it is the moral support and social relationship as a mentor for the student. Local Reviews

I'd like to highly recommend Dwight to any other families. His kind and patient demeanor translate into a great tutor. He's been very helpful. My daughter just got her results from her Algebra test which Dwight had to catch her up on as that's one of the topics she missed. She got 93%. Great result and proof of Dwights great tutoring.

Inside Keilor LodgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Leah focused on financial mathematics, including compound interest and reducing balance loans, applying formulas with a financial calculator.

In Year 10, Evangeline worked through trigonometry—using Sine and Cosine Rules and interpreting trig graphs—and practised unit circle concepts.

For Year 12, Sam tackled networks and graphs, exploring chapter content such as shortest paths and network matrices using step-by-step diagrams to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without her exercise book, making it hard to track progress or review past learning—as a tutor noted, it was difficult to determine what she had learned.

In Year 10 algebra, one student struggled with note-taking and often left equations incomplete; messy notes led to repeated confusion during revision.

Another senior student in probability entered sessions unprepared, having forgotten both textbook and basic materials like pen and paper. This lack of organization meant lesson time was spent improvising rather than building skills. The result: avoidable frustration when trying to connect new concepts with earlier work.

Recent Achievements

One Keilor Lodge tutor noticed a high school student, Kristian, take real initiative by asking to revisit tricky maths topics and then completing all his assigned homework—a big shift from relying on prompts in earlier sessions.

In another recent session, Leah (also high school) began trying out new problem-solving methods herself rather than waiting for step-by-step guidance; she even tackled unfamiliar material using these strategies.

Meanwhile, a younger student, Evangeline, started creating her own summary sheets before tests and now writes more detailed notes without being prompted—something she hesitated to do just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sydenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Catholic Regional College North Keilor.
