The most important thing I can do is to help my students in understanding concepts in a simple way. I can provide constant feedback on my student's progress and guide them in areas that they struggle with. I can also provide tips in order to score well in exams, sometimes smart work is better than hard work. I believe when a student likes the…

Help them gain a thorough understanding of concepts that they are incapable of doing alone, I want the student to understand that academic marks is not what we are trying to achieve but more of the effort and interest that they put in the subject which will lead towards success a process that needs to be taken instead of chasing the 90 + target…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to not only teach content but to be there as a mentor. Exam periods, life and post-school options can all be stressful for students and it is vital that a tutor can mentor students throughout this through stress mechanisms. Firstly, I believe making studying more easily accessible to a student by incorporating their interests into the learning process is an effective way to entice them to learn and become motivated to study on their own. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student undoubtedly derives from being blatantly honest with your student(s). Although understandable, your job is a tutor IS to be as…

It's the capacity to come up with new approaches to assist your kids in learning. Students learn in different ways and at varying speeds. As a student, I expect my teachers to explain things in a way that I can grasp. Unlike my university instructors, who simply read the slides and call it a class. NO! I don't teach that manner, and I don't…

Inside Kellyville RidgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lucas completed a start-of-year assessment and then worked on improving grammar and spelling in his writing, including strategies for there/their/they're and reading aloud to catch errors.

Year 8 student Sienna focused on expanding brackets with negative numbers and simplifying complex algebraic expressions, practising with up to three expansions per problem.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia tackled differentiation concepts, specifically tangents and normals, using diagrams to support her understanding of the geometric applications.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, she needed a refresher on algebraic principles and hesitated with questions that switched the order of numbers and variables, making her less confident in problem-solving.

During a senior maths session, over-reliance on visual methods instead of formulaic approaches was noted when finding midpoints and gradients; this led to gaps in understanding more advanced material.

A tutor observed in Year 6 English that spelling practice was needed for less common words like "permission" and "technology."

In Year 8, confusion between similar mathematical terms during exam review meant corrections were not always applied consistently.

Recent Achievements

In Kellyville Ridge, a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with algebraic fractions now independently tackles complex problems, correctly identifying which techniques to use without prompting.

In Year 9 maths, one student who previously struggled to see errors in her work is now pinpointing her own mistakes on tests and explaining where she went wrong before asking for help.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who began unsure about frequency tables recently completed them accurately and quickly during the session, even finishing all questions without needing reminders.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I thought you might be pleased to hear our daughter, Arizona, is very, very happy with Lawrence's tutoring. It has been a meaningful development for her, albeit there is a great deal of fundamental work to do to bring her up to where she really needs to be. Thank you for your support with this.

Just a short note to let you know we will be finishing off with Alex today, as Penelope sits her HSC maths paper tomorrow. He has been a terrific help and I would be thrilled to recommend him if you need any references.

All is well. We agree it can take some time to settle in, but having Meg has already improved the children's routine and helped up with homework. The plan is to increase the time that she comes to 1 and a half hours. We are looking at then continuing that through next year.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Vinegar Hill Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John XXIII Catholic College (Primary).
