The most important thing a tutor can do is help their students develop study skills so that they are equipped to learn anything by themselves. I am very patient and I always try to explain difficult concepts in ways that I found easier to understand when I was learning them (eg. acronyms and visual…

I touched on some of these points in my previous answers, but as a tutor I believe the ultimate goal should be to provide one's students with an academic toolbox in the form of an understanding of the fundamental principles of any given topic. By covering first principles, and providing students with problem-solving abilities, he or she can then…

As a tutor, the ability to get a student invested in the topic they are learning and keep it sustained by making the process an organized effort through active conversations and dialogue is vital in any classroom. Being a student myself, I understand the mindset a student has when trying to mentally grasp a concept and use it to solve problems.…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give the student confidence that they can complete problems on their own and be successful in their studies. I remember how disheartening it was when I couldn't understand or effectively answer problems in school. Especially at a younger age, academic success is a value that…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is instill confidence in their students so they can tackle problems they were previously unfimiliar with on their own, as well as perform in high stress environments, such as tests. The best way to do this in my opinion is to go through practice problems with the students untill they fully…

It has to come from my intention to teach and improve the student's quality of life. Without it, teaching will be bland, inauthentic, and forgettable. It also has to come from giving students the ability to think and solve challenging problems by themselves. Without it, the student will not develop independency or grit to solve life's ordeal. One…

A very personal thing I like to teach my students is to pay attention to the small details. Each and every word, each and every equation. It is the ability to start at a granular level that makes the grand ideas and concepts easier to understand. My strength is really my ability to understand the student well. I believe different methods of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them to understand that the concepts and techniques they are learning are much less frightening and overwhelming when they are boiled down and simplified into manageable components. When tackling a problem, the more aspects we don't understand, the more likely we are to panic and deem…

Teach student life. Being kind human is better than an arrogant genius. I look up to my mentors, who not only taught me skills, but also gave me their thoughts and their experience. I always say that the most important thing is being patient. I know that every child is different, so tutors have to adapt to each child and teach children in the appropriate way, since each student understands subjects differently. I am a young person, so I am able to understand a child in many situations. I am aware of mental health and the…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach perseverance and adaptability, because sometimes, the only thing you need to do to learn something new or that you struggle with, is just to change your perspective a little. Students can of course vary greatly in their strengths, difficulties and needs. This is true both intrinsically and as a function of development and external context. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is therefore to diagnose those individual needs, and "meet the student where they are." The essential problem of tutoring…

I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

A tutor should be able to provide a different perspective for the students they are teaching. Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

Inside Kelvin GroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Angus focused on probability concepts, including two-way tables and Venn diagrams, with practice questions to build confidence ahead of his assessment.

In Year 9, Lina worked through trigonometry topics such as sine and cosine rules using example problems, and also tackled compound interest calculations involving both direct and reverse scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jessica covered advanced Specialist Mathematics skills by practising integration techniques—like u-substitution, integration by parts, and partial fractions—through step-by-step walkthroughs of homework and revision problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student arrived at a recent lesson without having completed her assigned Optimisation homework, saying she was too busy; as the tutor noted, "she is yet to do last week's homework…as well as other exercise questions." This pattern left gaps in understanding, especially when unfamiliar integration techniques appeared on exams.

In Year 10, another student struggled to start problem-solving tasks independently—without a hint, progress stalled and practice outside lessons remained limited.

For Year 7 algebra revision, one learner frequently confused positive and negative signs: "minor mistakes kept creeping in," slowing feedback and review.

Missed practice or incomplete preparation often meant time was spent re-covering basics instead of advancing new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Kelvin Grove tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitating to start integration problems, now jumps straight in independently and selects the right method on her own.

A Year 10 student has begun openly asking questions about mock test errors—something she avoided previously—so she can clarify tricky points before her upcoming exam.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to rush through worded maths questions now takes time to extract key details before solving, showing real care and accuracy by reading each question twice before answering.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Grange Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kelvin Grove State College.
