I believe patience and empathy toward students who are struggling is one of the most important factors while being a tutor. I also posses organisational and planning skills so that I can structure lessons and prepare for sessions effectively so that all sessions are optimised. Adaptation to a student’s learning pace is also very crucial as each…

A student comes to a tutor looking for extra help, answers and guidance. I strongly feel that tutors can make a huge difference to a student's academic front. The most important things us tutors can do are be patient and listen, willing to explain more than once if required, enable students to end up answering their questions rather than answering…

One the most important things we can do for our students is to show them the tools they need and habits to build and become independent. As a tutor it is important to help the child build their confidence in the subject they require aid in but eventually hope they will be able to become independent. My extensive experience of having worked with…

1. Building Confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt when faced with challenging material. A tutor should work to build the student’s confidence by celebrating their progress, providing positive reinforcement, and helping them realize that they can overcome difficulties with persistence. 2. Adapting to Individual Needs: Every…

Be honest. If a tutor is unsure about the concept or topic, find out more before getting back to the student instead of pretending to know and teaching them the wrong thing. I am flexible and can work around the student's needs. Additionally, my attention to detail will allow me to spot their areas of weakness, increasing focus on those topics.…

The most important thing that a tutor could do for a student is to ignite a student's passion about a subject. A student should understand the concepts and be inspired by the subject that was taught to them. By setting the spark, it'll leave a lasting impression to the student. My strengths as a tutor would be that I am always eager to help people…

Tutoring to me is so much more than simply teaching the subject matter to a student. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to build the student's confidence and faith in him/herself. As much as it is important to ensure that a student understands and is able to make practical use of the knowledge gained, I…

A tutor has a significant impact on a student's life. A good tutor can motivate the students and make them fall in love with the subject. Things taught the right way can stay with students forever and contribute to shaping their future. Apart from the knowledge imparted by the tutors, they share their wisdom and values with their students. One…

I believe in empowering students by being a source of encouragement so that they build the confidence to solve novel problems. Allowing creativity in problem solving and not being rigid when things are done in a way that is different from what is usually done should be encouraged as well. Ultimately, all students will come across problems that…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help students stop fearing what they don’t know. Once that fear is gone, they can focus on real learning instead of just chasing marks. A tutor’s role is to guide them to see mistakes as part of the process, build their confidence, and make knowledge something they’re curious about rather…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. The important thing that a tutor can give a student is time and attention which he might not get in classroom of students. The tutor can also build self-confidence and problem-solving skills by making him approach the issue first and then guide the correct…

Josh is doing a terrific job with our 9 year old daughter Sophie. Sophie loves her sessions with Josh so much that she has now asked for 2 a week. A great testament to Josh because what child is happy to do 2 extra hours work after school and on the weekend. The request was self initiated. Josh has a really good style which blends hard work with fun - a great way to keep children engaged. It has only be a month and we can see really good progress in Sophie and her abilities and confidence.

Inside Kent TownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex worked through algebraic word problems and tackled rates and ratio questions, practising setting up equations from real-world scenarios.

In Year 10, Mia focused on solving trigonometry word problems and challenging geometry questions, using diagrams to visualise unknown sides and angles.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Kael concentrated on statistics for Methods, working through textbook exercises involving data interpretation and probability concepts in preparation for an upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, a student's maths solutions were difficult to follow due to unclear layout; as noted, "his presentation of solutions made it harder for him to understand the problem-solving process."

A Year 9 student struggled with setting up equations in word problems—often not defining variables clearly before moving forward.

In Year 11 Biology, another found it challenging to implement memory tools she had created for differentiating endocytosis and exocytosis.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing a folio assignment in Specialist Maths had trouble structuring their approach when faced with unfamiliar, open-ended graphing tasks—resulting in repeated trial-and-error rather than purposeful revision.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kent Town noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate when tackling worded algebra problems; now, he slows down and talks through each step out loud before solving, which has led to more accurate answers.

Another recent win involved a Year 10 student who previously struggled with trigonometry—she now confidently labels triangle sides herself and can choose the correct formula for each problem without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student, once quiet during sessions, has started asking lots of questions while building two-way tables for probability tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Adelaide City Libraries - City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Prince Alfred College.
