I believe it is essential to know students, understanding students’ preferred learning styles and learning difficulties. Based on the understanding, a tutor can design customized lesson plans to attract students to learn. Additionally, a tutor can provide continuous feedback in way students are comfortable with to demonstrate where students have…

Encouragement. Learning something new can be hard. Things that do not come easily have the potential to discourage us, but the only way for anyone to fail is if they give up. As a tutor it is my number one priority to emphasize the successes of each student, and to find ways to inspire them to keep trying to learn. I will consider each session of…

From my experience, one of the most important thing I can do is finding out the weakness of students and helping them overcome that weakness instead of letting them away from it. Tutors should be honest, too when there is the question that we do not know. Last but not least, tutors should help students build confidence and give support as much as…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help students build their confidence in their ability to learn. This includes helping them form study habits that can aid them in their secondary and tertiary education as well as frequently revising past concepts to help them build a strong foundation for their future learning. I believe my biggest…

Understanding and learning about the child's needs and adapting your teaching style to best suit their needs. It is also important to develop a trusting relationship in which the child knows that the tutor is there to provide them with the best support they can offer to aid their learning. I believe that I am a very child-centered tutor. I believe…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them want to study a topic, to present a topic in a certain way that makes the student more enthusiastic to learn. Although understanding a subject is extremely important, I believe the students' willingness to learn is equally important as trying to teach a student to…

I believe the most important thing here would be to ensure the student understands what is being taught and is able to move forward in their learning. Tutors as facilitators must be able to give them the confidence that they are improving and can do even better with persistent practice and revision. I think one of my greatest strengths is being…

The learnings given by a tutor needs to be tailored as per the student.. Every individual is different, has different interests, has different caliber. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

Giving them encouragement and prompting them to keep trying. Emphasizing repetition is very important. It builds a 'keep trying' attitude in the students that will carry them through school and further on in their lives. I am patient with students. (1) Value of patience: Being a tutor/teacher means I have to face a range of students whose level of understanding completely vary. My students will emotionally accept me only if I am patient enough. (2) Value of resilience: Teaching is very flexible as I should be active to explore the strengths and weaknesses of my students, finally develop…

The most important thing for a tutor is to provide a fun learning environment for the student and empower them to learn. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to instill a sense of self-efficacy in the student, the belief that one is able to accomplish things and solve difficult problems through hard work and practice. A tutor should also provide constructive feedback to a student to foster student's progress. Once the student embraces…

Inside KeswickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alice worked on algebraic expressions and basic trigonometry, practicing expanding brackets and identifying unknowns.

For Year 11, Sam focused on using derivatives to find sign diagrams and analyse the shape of graphs, then applied second derivatives to locate key graph points.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Grace concentrated on integration techniques and revisited core concepts through targeted exam preparation questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student's graph sketching was limited, making it harder to interpret trigonometric functions; as a tutor noted, "she needed prompting to connect different types of trig questions."

In Year 9, messy and disorganized books meant assignment instructions were missed or misunderstood—this led to confusion when drawing diagrams for worded problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student hesitated with time conversions and mixed up "half past" and "minutes to," especially under test conditions.

A lack of regular homework completion in these cases left gaps unaddressed until just before assessments, adding unnecessary stress during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Keswick tutor recently noticed Tia catching herself about to draw a line with the wrong gradient during a revision session—last term she often needed step-by-step help for this.

In another case, Molly (also high school) began bringing in her own tricky questions from class and now works through challenging problems independently after just some light prompting; previously, she hesitated to tackle harder tasks alone.

Meanwhile, Natalia in Year 3 showed new initiative by self-correcting missed parts of questions without reminders and successfully read an analogue clock unassisted for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Goodwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond Primary School.
