I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. I am smart, young and very well spoken. I speak from a place of confidence and can be very entertaining for kids/youth. I would like to think I am quite…

A tutor can increase a student's confidence in their abilities through consolidation of concepts. This is important as to do well in any subject, a student needs to believe in themselves and their capabilities. I am good at going slowly, step by step, through difficult concepts to break them down into understandable…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

A tutor not only teaches a subject but also educates students. There is a practically infinite number of resources for teaching English in any topic, from music and films to books and articles. Choosing the right resources is extremely beneficial for students to widen their knowledge about the world. While focusing primarily on English, I find it…

The ability to understand a student and their learning style is something I highly value in a tutor. In school classes where they are often one of many, they may find that the teaching style may not work for them and that they cannot achieve their goals. In a tutoring scenario, we are able to cater to them more specifically, to be intuitive about…

Listen to what the student actually wants help with and find out the root cause of why they are stuck or confused. The teacher needs to work together with the student, not against them. I am training to become a teacher and so I have a good understanding of how learning can occur, especially for students. I have been able to help students in the…

The most important things a tutor can do are build the student's confidence, adapt to their learning style, and make complex concepts clear and relatable. As a recent student myself, I can easily relate to students and adapt my teaching to their needs. I simplify complex concepts, use engaging methods, and make learning feel less…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to genuinely care for the student. Because i feel when you care for the student it becomes very easy to build a rapport and teaching becomes more simple. I am a very adaptable person in general and i apply this in my tutoring as well. Every student is different and i think it is…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and technical…

The most important thing tutors can do for a student is to just be there for the student and give their students the motivation and encouragement to work, having a tutor myself those were the things that assisted me in achieving my scores. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn in a way that maximises their potential. Everyone learns in a different way and I believe a tutor can find what is best for the individual. A tutor needs to be able to teach a student to be able to independently work through challenges. Whilst someone who has…

Forging a want to learn. Learning to read and write shouldn't be a chore; it's what makes people human. A tutor can say they've done a good job if the student chooses to work on their skills and improving themselves even out of lessons. Empathy and openness. Everyone is different and has different things that matter to them. Learning more about…

I think it is important for tutors to be able to identify which areas students struggle with, then find a way to break it down and explain it to students so they fully understand. Tutors need to be patient and also be able to listen to what questions the students have, understand the problem and then explain the question to them slowly. Tutors…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

Inside KewTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Annie revised linear equations and explored polynomials and real functions, using worked examples to clarify each step.

In Year 9, Lenny tackled trigonometry concepts with a focus on SOH CAH TOA and also reviewed past tests covering linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ethan practiced times tables (3s and 4s) alongside school homework on multiplication, supporting accuracy through repeated exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student's stress during tests led to misreading questions and answering incorrectly—"she misread the condition or questions, hence wrote down the wrong answer." She was encouraged to highlight key words and practice under timed conditions.

In Year 9 Maths, messy or incomplete working made isolating variables in equations harder; a tutor noted that neater layout would help track steps for midpoint and distance tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to show written working in mixed fraction subtraction due to fear of mistakes, which slowed improvement and left gaps when reviewing errors together.

Recent Achievements

A Kew tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, after previously relying heavily on step-by-step guidance, now solves simultaneous equations using the elimination method with much more independence and even asks for extra practice when unsure.

In senior Chemistry, another high schooler who used to hesitate with equilibrium questions is now confidently tackling harder examples and did especially well on their first SAC, showing clear improvement since last term.

Meanwhile, in primary maths, Annie moved from needing help with multiplying and dividing fractions to gradually answering these on her own by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kew Primary School.
