A good tutor will work themselves out of a job. This is because a good tutor will not only teach the student the content but also how to learn. Therefore the student will be able to become independent of the tutor and then be able to teach other students. I am able to explain concepts clearly and concisely in a number of different ways. Thereby…

I believe going the extra mile to ensure that a student has the proper understanding is primordial. In the past, I have dealt with tough students with patience and empathy, clearing my students’ doubts and making them gain an in – depth understanding of the subject. I prefer to portray myself more a friend than a tutor and reassure my students…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student are: - Showing empathy and support (sharing one's own experience as a past student from a perspective of strength, resilience and learning) - Promoting empowerment - this means not doing questions for a student, but engaging them in shared decision-making about working through…

In my point of view, a good tutor should be a good listener to students. The tutor should able to fix the student's queries. The qualities like patient, flexible, openness and active are important things for a tutor because the student will observe the tutor and we may influence them at some point. so, it is essential for a tutor to have good…

Nowadays, a good teacher is not just deliver learning materials, lecture student and give instruction and information, but play a facilitator role. We need to teach them how to learn and how to solve problems. Good teachers have a huge impact on learners and help them engage in lifelong learning. I think it is important for tutors to be able to identify which areas students struggle with, then find a way to break it down and explain it to students so they fully understand. Tutors need to be patient and also be able to listen to what questions the students have, understand the problem and then explain the question to them slowly. Tutors…

Most importantly, the tutor should be able to help the student achieve their desired academic results whilst under the tutor's tutelage, as this is the whole purpose of being a tutor. However, it is almost equally important to instill confidence in a student, that they will feel comfortable enough to step out of their comfort zones. More often…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. Alex has been a great tutor for my son. He is patient, encouraging and explains things clearly. My son feels feels so much more confident in Maths thanks to Alex!
Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
