One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to understand the way in which they learn so that the tutor can best apply their teaching strategy. A tutor should be firm but fair in their teaching manner in order to build rapport and effectively teach their students. I believe that my strengths are that I am encouraging, helpful…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. More often than not it's not the concept itself but how the student is processing the concept, and if you don't see that you'll only be able to help them understand through repetition. My ability to tailor lessons to a students needs and study styles. I enjoy working with both…

Inside KeysboroughTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Jaxxon worked on one-digit addition and subtraction, as well as reading analogue clocks to the nearest five minutes.

Year 9 student Trin practiced trinomial factorisation using both the cross product and grouping methods, alongside solving bearings problems with step-by-step diagrams.

In Year 10, Emma focused on solving quadratic equations through factorisation and completing the square, also tackling worded questions that connect quadratics to real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, a student repeatedly avoided writing out all working steps, choosing to do calculations in their head; as noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This made it harder to trace mistakes and slowed progress on multi-step questions.

A Year 11 student over-relied on her calculator but forgot key settings like the degrees symbol, leading to incorrect trigonometry answers.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student left place value homework incomplete and struggled to remember addition strategies between sessions—making retention of new skills challenging when revisiting similar problems days later.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Keysborough noticed that one high school student, who used to hesitate when unsure, now immediately asks for help as soon as something feels unclear—leading him to complete all his worksheets and homework on time without reminders.

Another high schooler has begun tackling challenging worded maths problems by breaking them down independently, only seeking hints when truly stuck, a big step up from previously waiting passively for guidance.

In Year 4, Charlotte struggled with long multiplication and division at first but, after some targeted support, she managed to solve similar questions on her own during the session.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are over the moon with what John is teaching Alisha. She was in her Maths class yesterday and the teacher asked the class a question that no one new the answer to except Alisha. The teacher was so impressed.

Tutoring seems to be going well. Joel's teacher has reported an improvement in his confidence and ability which is fantastic.

Sarah is fabulous! Friendly knowledgeable and flexible with times to work in with my child. Very happy with how she is working with my daughter.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dandenong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chandler Park Primary School.
