The most important thing a tutor can provide I believe is confidence. This is because students' belief in their abilities will provide them with the clear and confident mind necessary to tackle difficult problems. In order to provide this confidence, I believe following a steady pace of teaching with lots of examples is the way. It is also…

To motivate him/her, and pave the way for him/her to become autonomous with his/her learning. This is typically done by instilling in the student a number of good learning habits. I have developed my own teaching/tutoring philosophy. I call it the 4CE philosophy (pronounced Foresee). It consists of five tenets: 1- Coaching/Coordination 2-…

A tutor should have a great deal of empathy to be able to understand what the student is going through in order to understand why they are experiencing difficulties to help them solve a problem. I am understanding and empathetic which allows me to figure out if and why a student may not comprehend a concept. I am also a quick learner and can…

I believe that a tutors role extends beyond just teaching; they are trusted. Receiving tutoring for scholarship subjects for myself in high school, what was my impactful was tutors providing a safe space for open discussion and drawing insights from their learning journeys. As a result, I felt a genuine connection which transformed my tutors from…

A tutor not only should be able to help a student understand the subject on a deeper level, but also spark their interests within a subject. They can also serve as great role models which can help them in becoming a better person overall. I am very adaptable, resilient and patient with my teaching. I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is really important for tutors to understand the needs and abilities of their students in order to maintain progress. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

One of my tutors in Year 12 told us that confidence is the most important thing a student can have. This has proven to be true in my experience. Once I gained confidence in my knowledge, I was able to experiment with answering questions in different ways, deepening my understanding. As a tutor, the most important thing to do is inspire confidence…

Let them vent! A tutor shouldn't just teach the student, they should also listen. Having a young, relatable, smart person in your life to discuss your problems with is invaluable to the younger generation. On top of this, tutors should provide advice on any aspect of a student's life, more than just the subject(s) they're receiving tutoring…

Focus on his weaknesses and try to overcome them. I think it is really essential to maintain a genuine environment under which students an freely ask about their queries. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them understand what they themselves cannot. Is to empathise with the student. Tell them that you know what it's like to be in their shoes, and put their minds at ease with your ability to translate your expertise to them. At the end of the day, the student wants to improve their confidence. Confidence can be built by gaining the students trust in your Mathematical or Physics ability. My…

From my experiences and a tutor and a student, a tutor should never make their lesson feel daunting and uninviting. For example focusing only on heavy amounts of homework can be very off putting for a student. A tutor should be encouraging the student to enjoy the subject they are teaching, because the more enjoyable it is to the student the more…

Bec Wallace, Kings Langley

Inside Kings LangleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia worked on addition and subtraction with decimals, then practiced multiplying and dividing fractions.

For Year 8, Ethan revised algebraic expressions—expanding brackets and simplifying equations—and solved word problems involving algebraic fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Priya focused on non-right angled trigonometry using sine and cosine rules, along with applying these skills to solve angle of elevation and depression questions using real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's work on linear equations often lacked clarity, with handwriting and working steps needing improvement—"focusing on writing the steps of working rather than only questions and answers" was flagged as essential.

For a senior student preparing for HSC maths, revision mostly involved familiar or easier material from past exams, instead of targeting challenging topics; this limited exposure to new problem types before assessment.

In Year 8, forgetting key materials like books set progress back by hours during tutoring sessions.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 learner skipped regular homework, which meant gaps in understanding went unaddressed week-to-week.

Recent Achievements

One Kings Langley tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after struggling to structure responses in the past, now approaches exam questions methodically and even completes sample papers independently as part of his preparation.

In a Year 8 session, a student who previously hesitated to ask for help arrived with specific questions ready each week and tackled revision using past papers more proactively.

Meanwhile, during a primary session, one younger learner who often made mistakes converting between improper and mixed fractions now switches between them efficiently and can add fractions without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lalor Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kings Langley Public School.
