A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Negativity can lead to resentment towards a subject and deflect the student from making a genuine effort to learn. A tutor also needs to be well-versed with the material so they can teach the student as…

Help them enjoy learning. The role of a tutor should be to engage the student and make the learning process fun, encouraging them to put more effort into their learning, consequently improving their results. As well as this, it is vital that a tutor guide the student to a solution rather than simply giving them the answer, allowing them to…

I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build self-confidence. From my own experience, I know that grasping a concept feels much harder when it seems 'impossible.' Confidence changes that perspective, making challenges feel doable and providing the energy needed to tackle difficult problems. I foster this through…

The most important thing would be to instill interest. A tutor can help improve a student in academic success. In a classroom setting a teacher has to cover a specific amount of content within a particular time period, some students can pick up the content very easily while others may lag behind on the content. A tutor however solves this issue by understanding the student's strengths and weaknesses…

It is essential that the student feels comfortable learning, and as a tutor I think it is our job to achieve this. I am of the opinion that the most important things for tutors to do is to be patient and make the student feel comfortable. Inside KirribilliTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Xander focused on trigonometric ratios, using targeted practice to strengthen understanding for upcoming assessments, and also worked through a recent maths exam to address specific errors.

In Year 7, Soraya practiced identifying properties of quadrilaterals and triangles—including congruency tests—while briefly revisiting composite area questions as set by her school teacher.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Maya improved her ability to tell time on an analog clock (including "quarter to" and "half past") and completed multiplication exercises for fluency.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 trigonometry, one student repeatedly needed to consult notes for basic ratios, slowing progress during problem sets—she kept flipping back instead of recalling sine/cosine values.

In a senior class, another student hesitated with exam-style algebraic questions and often deferred to decimals when unsure, revealing a reluctance to attempt more challenging symbolic work.

A Year 7 learner struggled with messy layout on multi-step geometry tasks; as noted, "we're working on slowing down her working out so we can spot errors together." This led to confusion in converting between units mid-calculation and left both student and tutor searching for the misstep rather than building confidence.

Recent Achievements

In a Kirribilli tutoring session, Charlie, a high school student, completed a past exam paper without needing to consult her notes for most questions—a big step from earlier sessions where she'd pause or double-check formulas.

Another tutor noted Soraya, also in high school, now explains her thought process out loud and willingly shares how she tackles geometry problems; previously, she hesitated to speak up unless prompted.

Meanwhile, Xander in Year 3 moved from struggling with number sentences last week to confidently solving each one correctly this time around—finishing the worksheet on his own without help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Raymond is FANTASTIC - the benefits of his tutoring is already obvious with my eldest very confident and my youngest gaining it!

Our son started with his maths tutor in Year 6, he was struggling and his marks were in the lower quartile of the class.  Now half way through Year 7, he's gained confidence with maths and achieving excellent marks placing him above the year average.  His tutor is a great young uni student, he takes the time to explain problems in a way our son can understand them, he's patient and clear when he needs to redirect a problem.  One of the great benefits is the wonderful example he has been to our son, showing him how maths will play an important part in what he might want to do in the future. We are extremely pleased with results our son is achieving and credit a lot of the improvement to the support and work of our Ezy Math Tutor.  We love that tutoring happens at home and at a time that works for us a family.

Thankyou. We have had our first session with Asitha and are very happy. He had a lovely manner and my daughter felt very comfortable with him. He has a great attitude and we think it is going to work out well.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Loreto Kirribilli.
