The most important thing by far, especially that I have found over the years, is to have a presence that shows genuine concern for the student's understanding. I believe tutors bear much more of a responsibility than they let on. In my experience, the way a tutor approaches a problem with a student, no matter how trivial, can mean the difference…

My dream is simple. I want to guide students in a way that goes beyond text books. It's not just about math or science, but the life skills like mindset, the joy of learning, and the art of studying. I believe every tutor should make learning feel a little fun, showing kids that it can be fun and that it isn't boring, which is what is important…

To work with a happy and motivated student allows to improve and learn in a better way. That's why a good feeling with the child is very important. Making her/his problem as mine, I can reach a full engagement with her/him. The tutor must also show security, respect, motivation and passion. I can improve her/his skills for study in order to…

The most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s understanding, confidence, and curiosity. A tutor should explain concepts clearly, be patient, adapt to the student’s learning style, and encourage questions. Most importantly, a tutor should help the student learn how to think and solve problems independently, not just give…

The first greatest thing that tutor can do for a student is serve as a ladder for the student to progress to next level of life in any kind of circumstances and letting students to take challenges as an opportunity. In ensuring promising life for those innocent students and making them succeed in the field which I had processed with and moreover…

By listening I know how best to tutor in a way that is specific and beneficial for them. I am a good communicator and excellent at listening to the needs of my students. I am…

Having empathy, because not all content comes too easy for students as it does for us, obviously. Having patience, because it can be frustrating if a tutor just expects a student to "get it" immediately. Being kind. This seems obvious but you may be surprised the number of teachers I've had and met who are not kind, and they are extremely hard…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. If the child is stuck on a concept, it is my responsibility to help the…

Developing a close relationship with students is essential in creating trust with a student. This allows a student to listen and follow your guidance. As a tutor, the most important thing to do is ensure the student is confident with their taught content. This is achieved initially by committing to your students work along-side them. Following…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to be so much more than what a teacher is. This involves building close bonds with their students to understand their academic needs so that tutoring sessions can be tailored specifically to the student. It is also extremely important for the tutor to always have a positive attitude and encourage their…

The most important thing a tutor can do is recognise their students ability level and mould their teaching to that level. This insures that the kids do not feel out of depth, but also they are learning new things every session. I am a very social and friendly person making it easy for me to build strong rapport with the students, and as a result…

Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. It is only that foundation can a tutor be able to deliver his best and at the same time the student will be keen to learn. It is the conducive learning environment that a tutor has to provide to enable the student to work to his/her maximum…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. I believe ultimately, the most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment where when asked "Do you understand?", the student feels free to say "Nope". This honesty is priceless and very helpful in identifying knowledge-gaps early. I pride myself on being patient. I was a slow learner, and often had questions which were ignored or…

A tutor should be able to identify and convey concepts that may be considered as challenging or difficult for the student in a simple and clear manner. Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. I felt that if I didn't build the trust with my students, then no matter how much I try, they will not improve. Therefore, building trust - looking confident and knowing what I am doing. My strength is making sure the students understand the concepts.…

From my point of view and based on my prior experience in this field, the most important and fair thing that a tutor is liable to do is to clarify the main concept to the learner first and then start solving relevant questions without jumping to this stage straightway. Tutor should ensure that the learner has learned the main points of concept…

Inside KirribilliTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Xander focused on trigonometric ratios, using targeted practice to strengthen understanding for upcoming assessments, and also worked through a recent maths exam to address specific errors.

In Year 7, Soraya practiced identifying properties of quadrilaterals and triangles—including congruency tests—while briefly revisiting composite area questions as set by her school teacher.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Maya improved her ability to tell time on an analog clock (including "quarter to" and "half past") and completed multiplication exercises for fluency.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 trigonometry, one student repeatedly needed to consult notes for basic ratios, slowing progress during problem sets—she kept flipping back instead of recalling sine/cosine values.

In a senior class, another student hesitated with exam-style algebraic questions and often deferred to decimals when unsure, revealing a reluctance to attempt more challenging symbolic work.

A Year 7 learner struggled with messy layout on multi-step geometry tasks; as noted, "we're working on slowing down her working out so we can spot errors together." This led to confusion in converting between units mid-calculation and left both student and tutor searching for the misstep rather than building confidence.

Recent Achievements

In a Kirribilli tutoring session, Charlie, a high school student, completed a past exam paper without needing to consult her notes for most questions—a big step from earlier sessions where she'd pause or double-check formulas.

Another tutor noted Soraya, also in high school, now explains her thought process out loud and willingly shares how she tackles geometry problems; previously, she hesitated to speak up unless prompted.

Meanwhile, Xander in Year 3 moved from struggling with number sentences last week to confidently solving each one correctly this time around—finishing the worksheet on his own without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Loreto Kirribilli.
