Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. To truly understand a topic, you have to be able to explain it in a way that anyone could understand. I believe the most important thing you can do as a…

Build a relationship with the student. If you can make the sessions enjoyable then the student will be more likely to engage and try to improve. Patience, lots of students don't understand the concepts straight away and therefore you need to be patient with them to help them achieve their goals. Adaptability, every student learns in different…

The most important thing of a chemistry tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students,…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for the student is to encourage him/her to pursue a career in their liking and to empathise with their difficulties and teach them how to overcome them. It is also of utmost importance that a tutor must lower themselves to their understanding to teach a student. Passion to teach and a drive to…

I think a chemistry tutor is a map for the pathway of the student's success. The tutor will do all within their limit to make sure they have given enough importance to the student to excel. This includes the peripheral knowledge that a student should have surrounding the content/topic - which means what is the purpose of learning/ how is it going…

I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then…

A tutor is a magician to the students. He can't do magic but he can do wonders if the chemistry between the tutor. The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young…

A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. I think its understanding, confidence in knowledge and patience. Therefore being understanding of everyone's situations, capabilities and then being able to find a unique way of teaching a student that…

Giving a student enough time to get understand something. This could mean waiting for a student to attempt a question and ask for help, instead of helping them right away. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to learn alongside them. This inspires and encourages a student to be themselves and ask questions openly. Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
