Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. To truly understand a topic, you have to be able to explain it in a way that anyone could understand. I believe the most important thing you can do as a maths…

If you ask me, simplifying the concepts is the major task for a maths tutor. Just not the concepts but individual attention to the weaknesses and elimination of the same is a must to be a good tutor. Simplification of concepts and integration of the concept with real-world problems so that the learner could relate and understand the application of…

Help him or her to find their own ways to study most efficiently. Give them the tools, which would allow them to be more confident and comfortable in their learning not only at school, but also beyond. Good knowledge of my subjects and belief that math and science need the same systematic training to become easy, as sports. And that as only some…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to genuinely care for the student. Because i feel when you care for the student it becomes very easy to build a rapport and teaching becomes more simple. I am a very adaptable person in general and i apply this in my tutoring as well. Every student is different and i think it…

I think passion is the most important quality. With passion, it comes along with motivation. One with passion can often get the job done better than others without it. I believe my strengths are patience and passion. I love to help others improve and thrive, hence usually I would put more effort into teaching others. I can speak English,…

I believe in the importance of developing a student's own independent thinking skills, so that they gather the confidence to correctly respond to any problem that an exam or test may pose individually as I, the tutor, will not be there to help in assessments. By doing this, the student can cement beneficial study habits and obtain their academic…

Implementing new methods to teach the relevant concepts until the student is confident that he/she had understood it well. Making students self-assured in…

I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can be to a student is patient and kind. This is because there could be a particular concept the student is struggling with, so the tutor needs to be able to help them learn and improve on that topic. Being patient and kind in explaining it to the student is, therefore, an important part of doing…

I really fell that a maths tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I love to be with children and sometimes be like them and enjoy the life in a simple manner. This really makes a great bond between me and my students due to…

The most important thing of a maths tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to prepare them for later years in the subject they are working on and other subjects as well. With most tutors in the US, they only stay around if the student is having moderate to severe trouble (if the student is excelling, the parents don't usually want to pay for more…

Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Anusheel been tutoring Ramin for a few sessions now and  as you said it will take a few months to notice. However, so far Ramin is happy. He is having his year 11 final exam this week and Anusheel is doing a good Job, thank you.

Hello Erica, Thanks for touching base. Isabella is great. She's gelled really nicely with Meg, who is already saying that for the first time she understands why things are done a certain way, rather than just being told to do it. I'll let you know if any issues arise but at this point I can't see any at this stage. Cheers

Thank you for the follow up. Tegan is doing great and Thanaa is happy with her tutoring. Thank you for all the help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
