I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to learn alongside them. This inspires and encourages a student to be themselves and ask questions openly. Moreover, it helps the tutor become more approachable to the student. Other things that are quite important include: Not being afraid to admit that you need to look into…

Tutor should guide the student to think independently and creatively. This enables the student to form their own ideas and understand a concept in from different point of views instead of just following steps and rules. These skills are crucial for a student especially in the latter part of their school life. When I teach, I will put myself in the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand and support them. A student excelling in their studies is not simply a routine of worksheets and practice essays, but learning simple yet effective methods for studying such as flash cards, mind maps and games. It also goes beyond studying and into routines students can…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to feel free to ask questions and to query explanations. This way, it allows for me to answer their initial query as well as giving me the opportunity to proactively infer other areas that they may not completely understand. My strengths are centred…

I believe it is motivating and teaching the student how to get the most out of their time studying in and outside of their tutoring session. Not only will this mean they learn more but Increasing ones ability to learn means the student will enjoy studying more (as if feels like they're making progress). The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the one-on-one attention that is not given to them in schools with large class sizes. The student needs to be able to feel comfortable enough to ask questions (even the embarrassing ones) and they need to know that the tutor will sit with them for as long as it takes to…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. Nothing is stronger than a photographic memory, explaining things and concepts in a flow diagram or figure form will help students to retain more information. A tutor should be able to teach their students in an interesting manner, and be more personal. For me I had a tutor in mathematics in grade 6 and he was almost like a friend (and motivated me to enjoy maths myself), I don't think tutors need to be exactly like teachers as students already have to deal with them at school. Most importantly a tutor…

Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
