I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, foster a love for learning, and equip them with the tools to succeed independently. A good tutor not only helps a student understand the subject matter but also encourages them to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. For instance, while…

The most important thing is to make an individual understand the concept of the problem rather than individual problems so that they don't feel nervous when they a similar problem is presented in front of them. The whole point is that the child should feel comfortable around you and not hesitate to ask even the silliest questions, because no…

As a tutor one should be patient and flexible so that the student fully benefits from your lesson. Ultimately the classes are for imparting knowledge to the students. I believe it's important to provide clear and simple explanations, as well as to instil confidence in students' minds, as it empowers them to embrace challenges and achieve their full potential. Confidence encourages students to see learning as manageable rather than difficult. They need to enjoy what they do. According to my ex-students'…

I think first and foremost is adaptability. 2. Discipline comes after once you get adapted. 3. Communication with easing out the complex concepts. 4. Listening their problems and catering on them. 5. A teacher has to be patient while working with a student 6. At last but not least, humility is one of the most important thing when it comes…

To teach them a concept and allow them to add their own thoughts and perception to the given teaching. This in turn allows them to get a deeper understanding of the concept rather than just learning what is taught I am patient and can wait for the student to realize the logic of the course. The most important thing the tutor can do is create a safe trustworthy environment. The tutor should make is to make the lessons actually interactive and reasonably challenging for the…

I believe as a tutor, it is important to teach the subject to the student in a way that is enjoyable while still delivering the knowledge across. It is important that the tutor is not simply feeding the student equations or tricks to achieve good marks, but that the tutor is helping the student understand the topic enough to be able to solve…

Being a friend! Most students whom I’ve thought have confessed they gained more knowledge from me as they considered me to be more than a teacher as I had a great understanding from their point of view and tried to do more in class and reduce workload at home to balance their lives and education. In the meantime I’ve managed the time and…

Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
