The ability to pose different methods to learn a concept/idea is the most important thing a tutor can do, as not all students learn in the same way, My patience and preparation are both skills that enhance my abilities as a tutor in working with students. As well as, for older years, my knowledge of the NESA syllabus and marking criteria in order…

I think the most important things a tutor can do, beyond effectively communicating and teaching the syllabus, is to mentally support their students by creating a welcoming space so that they feel safe expressing their concerns. I also think that tutors have an obligation to take into consideration the personal academic goals of their students and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them complex concepts or topics they are struggling with without overwhelming them. I think it can be easy to overcome students with work, which can cause high-stress levels. Finding the right balance of pushing the student to do better while supporting them and not stressing them…

The outright role of a tutor is to improve a student's area of understanding of a subject and thus improve their grades for it. But a tutor should also recognise if a student may be more successful in a different path, and guide them to their preferred successes. A good tutor carries out their actions for their students, even if it is not of…

The tutor can motivate them and give them confidence to mitigate their weakness. The tutor should have spread positivity because that will help the students to study subjects that they doesn’t want to. Most importantly to a student a tutor is there to provide a student with the most positive, educational experience that suits the student's needs. A tutor must be adaptable to different learning styles and needs, adjusting to what is most beneficial to the student. As a recent high school graduate, I can lend an empathetic ear to the student and…

Tutoring in my opinion is not only putting pen to paper. I believe as a tutor it is vital to offer the students a level of support that encourages them to want to progress in their education, it is important to understand the individual you are tutoring as not only will it make them feel seen it will also massively improve their learning…

Inside Kyle BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Grace focused on finding fractions of whole numbers and converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Year 7 Olivia worked through algebraic expressions, including solving for unknowns in equations and simplifying terms.

For Year 8 Ethan, lessons covered measurement concepts such as unit conversions and reviewing data types like categorical versus numerical data, using real-world examples from his schoolwork.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 mathematics, a student showed hesitance in using correct terminology under time pressure; as one tutor noted, "she relied on memorisation rather than understanding when applying indices rules," which made scientific notation and unit conversions especially challenging during closed-book tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner struggled to lay out algebraic solutions clearly—working on grid paper instead of lined paper, as required for exams, led to messy calculations and errors in linear relationships.

In primary maths, confusion between units (grams vs kilograms) slowed progress with word problems involving conversions.

When asked to read questions aloud, one Year 4 student needed frequent reminders, resulting in overlooked instructions mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kyle Bay recently noticed some strong progress with high school students: one Year 11 student, who used to get stuck on trig proofs, now confidently recognises when to use sine or cosine rules without hesitation.

In a different session, a Year 12 biology student who struggled with structuring answers has started using clear frameworks for responses after targeted practice.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised their tutor by asking for hints—something new—then persisted through several tricky perimeter problems instead of giving up early.

Last week, that same student worked out the missing side lengths without any prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Ryan has been great. Jordon is already understanding more of the content which is fantastic. His words were "Ryan explains things much better than my teacher, so I understand it better."

All is going well with David. He is always on time and explaining things well with Ella. They are working through her math book and things are moving forward which is great. She will continue with a tutor once she starts school in Malaysia.

Thank you for your email. Ben and David are working well together and it appears that the working relationship is positive. Interestingly, Ben has instantly been able to move to working with David as both David and Ben have in common the same secondary school that Ben is currently going to. So while David attended the school some years prior to Ben, and much has change, they were still able to compare experiences about the school which helped start them working constructively. We are very satisfied with continuing with David.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as South Hurstville—or at your child's school (with permission), like Connells Point Public School.
