I think close support and motivation especially during their examinations is crucial. Making the student sharp by regular homework/assignments and making them fall in love with the subject and eventually learning are very important in my opinion. Identifying students strengths/passion and grooming them is another very imperative factor. I think…

The most important things a tutor can do for the student is to really get to know the strengths and weaknesses of the student. In identifying the strengths you can use these to help improve the weaker areas of learning. My strengths are being a patient and well resourced tutor. I’m finishing hsc last year I am up to date with knowledge of…

Although my goal is to see them be at the top of their class, it is more important to see improvements in their tutor lessons and use the knowledge I give them at school to refine their skills I am very easy going and I have a lot of patience. So I am good with kids that are struggling to understand. I use the 4 predominant learning styles:…

Inside Lake IllawarraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Molly worked on calculating the circumference and area of compound shapes, focusing on understanding rather than memorising formulas, and finished by tackling a challenging algebra question involving multiple steps.

Year 10 student Zoe revised solving equations with brackets and pronumerals on both sides, then moved onto surface area and volume concepts by reviewing her past test questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Mia covered compound interest calculations and discussed different types of financial mathematics problems she might encounter this term.

Recent Challenges

A recurring theme in Year 9 and 10 maths sessions was unclear or incomplete written working, particularly when tackling algebra or trigonometry.

For example, "needs to write down every step of working out to limit mistakes," a tutor noted after seeing skipped annotations led to confusion when revisiting earlier steps.

In senior classes, hesitation during problem-solving surfaced—especially under test conditions—where a lack of confidence meant answers weren't always attempted unless certainty was high.

As observed in Year 11, forgetting to clearly label financial maths steps made revision harder later on.

The result: lost marks from misreading questions or misplacing negatives that could have been caught with clearer structure and double-checking.

Recent Achievements

One Lake Illawarra tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate during class tests now tackling finance problems independently and even finishing her latest test ahead of time.

In Year 8, another student showed real growth by starting to check her own working for mistakes—last session, she caught and corrected an error herself without prompting, something she'd previously relied on the tutor for.

Meanwhile, a primary student who often guessed answers in maths is now confidently asking questions when stuck and explaining her reasoning step by step as she solves area problems.

Nishtha is fantastic, she is very patient and has a deep calming effect on Cole which has been excellent for his confidence.
