Set them on the right path. Helping them to understand concepts and develop skills (rather than just doing things for them) will mean that they can go on to use these skills themselves. This is very important for exam-taking. Communication. I ask for their input and check that they understand what I'm saying. I am patient and will explain a…

The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for a student is to provide a safe and supportive learning environment. It is to be someone that can positively influence and motivate students to work hard, boost their confidence and overcome any of their problems. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

I think a tutor should be capable of answering any questions discussing any uncertainties that a student may have. These should be explained clearly and if the student does not understand initially, the tutor should continue to explain in alternate ways (e.g. rewording sentences and visual aids such as diagrams) until the student understands. In…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to establish their confidence, give them the attention, teach the most efficient strategies to succeed in the exam with the least lessons. Students can't succeed in their exam is because there are so-called 'good students' in their class, for multiple reasons, their teachers don't actually…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to walk side by side with them. Although it is a certain subject that we teach to our students, it would be a shame if we just left it at that. I believe that tutors should walk with their students past just the subject, teaching them life skills as well. My biggest strength as a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instill confidence. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. The most important part of tutoring is to make sure the student grasps a concept entirely and doesn't have any gaps in their knowledge before moving onto new topics. It is essential for students to fully comprehend a difficult concept as this will help them remember it better, gain confidence in the topic and lower their stress. Additionally,…

Ultimately, a tutor only has so much time each week with a student and so I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students discover their own affinity for a particular subject and inspire them to carry out their own research. To this end, it is crucial to welcome curiosity and not to limit their imagination by restricting them…

Inside Lane CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jessica focused on mastering times tables and tackling area and perimeter problems using worded scenarios.

For Year 9, Ethan practised solving equations involving x² as well as applying the Pythagoras theorem to both direct distance and three-dimensional contexts, often using diagrams to visualise solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Zoe explored applications of trigonometric functions—solving for unknown sides with sine, cosine, and tangent—and worked through angle of elevation and depression questions in real-world settings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, one student often missed negative signs when rearranging equations—"be more careful with the positive and negative signs," as a tutor observed—which led to incorrect solutions even after correct initial steps.

A Year 9 student showed hesitation expressing probability answers as decimals or fractions, sometimes switching formats mid-question, which muddled final answers.

In senior trigonometry, confusion persisted between cosine and tangent when identifying sides of triangles, resulting in misapplied formulas and lost marks.

Meanwhile, a primary learner avoided showing long division working, likely from lack of confidence with times tables; this meant partial answers but no path for error-checking or feedback.

Recent Achievements

One Lane Cove tutor noticed a Year 8 student who previously hesitated with word problems now breaking down multi-step questions independently and spotting which details are relevant.

In Year 10, a student who used to confuse the gradient and y-intercept in linear equations can now correctly identify each part and graph the line without prompting.

Another recent session with a primary schooler showed real change: after weeks of struggling, she remembers far more of her times tables and tackled two-digit multiplication with much less reliance on written prompts, even choosing to try a harder problem herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lane Cove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lane Cove Public School.
