I think the most important thing to do as a maths tutor is to amend the teaching style for different students. Motivation was one of the things that I and many of my peers struggled with, and so, the last thing I want is for my student to not be engaged in the content. One way to do this to include connections to the student's interests. In…

I believe patience is key. Its important for a maths tutor to recognize that every student learns differently, and our role is to explain concepts in multiple ways with positivity and encouragement. I also believe that providing more than just academic support is crucial and helping students build confidence and develop effective learning…

My strengths as a tutor are i) Patience ii) Empathy iii) Communication skills--in particular the ability to break down a concept into simpler…

Give encouragement for their studies, give them confidence to write their exams well, help them with their inabilities. I am also capable of analysing the students'…

The most important role for a maths tutor is to get the best out of the students. This can take many forms but ultimately requires the tutor to be flexible in their teaching approach, understand the areas the student is struggling with and provide support in a way that is best received by the student. It is being able to relate to students who struggle and find a way that works for them, not necessarily a way that only works for me. In my experience, a student needs a maths tutor willing to adapt to their needs. A tutor can always keep track of their student's progress and help them achieve their goals. We are helping students achieve their…

In order for students to learn to the best of their ability, a maths tutor needs to create a safe space for them to make mistakes. I believe that the most valuable way to learn is through making mistakes. Additionally, a tutor must demonstrate healthy and effective communication with the student. Both of these aspects foster a respectful and…

I believe one of the most important things a maths tutor can do is remove the fear around a subject. For many students, especially in maths and science, the volume of information can be overwhelming. Even when they understand a concept, they may struggle to apply it under exam conditions due to panic or poor time management. My goal is to help…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do is adjust their teaching methods and style based on each student. Teaching with only one style and using the same methods for everyone won't work, and if you can't adjust, your sessions becomes very robotic and boring. I like to make sure I'm personalising my lessons for each individual student and I'm…

I consider empathy and genuine regard for the student and his/her learning experience as most important. While it is true that we could be highly skilled in the subject matter or content area, without genuine regard for the students teaching them might simply be mechanical and without connection. As a maths tutor, I think it is important to feel…

Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in a maths tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. Inside LangwarrinTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Jack explored measurement concepts ahead of class and deepened his understanding of quadrilaterals, polygons, and polyhedrons by investigating their properties.

For Year 8 Olivia, recent sessions focused on probability using tree diagrams and Venn diagrams, along with interpreting two-way tables.

In Year 9, Alex worked through expanding and simplifying linear algebraic expressions and practiced solving equations in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student became distracted midway through lessons and "leapt ahead and didn't follow the correct steps," which led to errors in multi-step probability questions.

A Year 11 student, when under test conditions, rushed and misread questions—resulting in lost marks despite knowing the method ("ran out of time on the exam due to silly mistakes").

In Year 10 physics, confusion arose when faced with vector force problems; although formulas were memorized, conceptual understanding was lacking, so applying knowledge to unfamiliar contexts was a struggle.

Moments of self-doubt caused some students to hesitate or second-guess even basic arithmetic.

Recent Achievements

A Langwarrin tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with negative numbers now solves equations independently and even asks for extra practice on tougher examples.

In Year 12 physics, another student who previously made errors applying motion formulas is now confidently identifying needed values and works through each step with minimal prompting.

Meanwhile, one primary student—who was reluctant to ask questions at first—now raises her hand whenever unsure and successfully completed a set of challenging division problems without guessing or skipping any steps.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carrum Downs Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Jude's School.
