Inside Launching PlaceTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Taiya practised spelling words and built on subtraction skills, including borrowing with regrouping.

In Year 7, Jamie worked through problems involving adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions, as well as strategies for finding unknown angles in triangles and along straight lines.

For Year 10, Codi revised circular functions using exam-style questions and also reviewed stationary points and their application to context-based problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student relied heavily on a single multiplication method and hesitated to try alternatives, as the tutor observed: "She has a very strong preference for one method… it's good for her to explore other methods." This limited flexibility in tackling more complex problems.

In Year 9 algebra, another student often forgot to bring materials and didn't complete homework revision sheets ahead of sessions—missing chances to pinpoint difficulties before tutoring.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner skipped writing out working for large subtraction problems, preferring mental calculation but then struggled with accuracy when questions grew harder.

Recent Achievements

One Launching Place tutor noticed that a high school student who previously relied heavily on hints is now independently selecting trigonometric ratios and laying out clear, logical working for each step—something she struggled with before.

In another session, a Year 11 English student not only embedded quotes fluently in her essays but also challenged herself by generating new interpretations of the text beyond what had been discussed together.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once hesitated to attempt unfamiliar words has begun consistently sounding them out rather than defaulting to "I don't know."

What they say about our tutoring

quote

So far Katie has been prompt, personable and prepared. As you say it is very early days -we are only just getting to the point where we are clear on where she is at and where she needs to be.

Yes we are happy with Kavindu. Emily seems more confident with one on one home tutoring than class tutoring. thanks

He's here now, drinking miso and walking Em through Pythagoras (poor sole). It's all good.  She appreciates this time and enjoys his learning insights so that's a winner.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarra Junction Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Launching Place Primary School.
