I believe a tutor's role is to help students truly understand what they're learning, build their confidence, and develop skills they can use beyond the classroom. I'm patient and adaptable, and I take the time to explain concepts in different ways until they really make sense to the student. I try to create an encouraging space where they feel…

A tutor should be able to understand a student very well and be with them when they are in need. Many students tend to hate maths for a number of reasons but surely this can easily been changed and it is the tutor’s responsibility to do so. My main strength is that I am great with kids. I can easily understand a child’s weakness and will…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student that always actively listen to a student and understand lives they live. I do believe that my strengths as a tutor are building strong, personal relationships with students and having specific content expertise. As roughly 2 years providing one-on-one sessions, to what I have learned…

I wasn't the smartest kid in the school and I don't think a person good at doing tutoring is how their intelligent in the area. I believe is more like how they can understand the children, understand why they feel the difficult on the subject. As Normal kid myself, I have the ability be the good tutor I think. I have the ability to allow kid to…

2 Visions I embrace with every student I teach: 1. For the student to adopt good work habits. For example: - maintaining complete and well-ordered notes for every class - diligent homework completion - asking their classroom teacher for clarification as soon as they do not understand a new concept and, - ensuring any missed…

A tutor should provide a learning environment where students can build their confidence in academic performance. I believe it is crucial to get students engaged enthusiastically in the subjects and be open to their questions. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to have them gain confidence with themselves in terms of excelling in school. I think this confidence is important in not just getting high marks in quizzes and tests, but I believe that being confident will help them long-term in solving problems not just in school, even though…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student understand a topic. This may sound intuitive however it is often majorly overlooked and replaced with acceptance or shear memorisation for the student. What I want is for my students is a true understanding of the subject, giving them the tools of learning so that they can…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is give a student confidence in themselves. It is not the tutor's job to simply pass on their own knowledge, but rather to show the student that they had the ability to excel on their own all along. Tutors can do this by explaining concepts in a new way or more slowly than they may have been…

Mathematics is all about practice and being exposed to different variations of questions, and a tutor should be able to acknowledge the students' situation and prepare the most suitable practice exercises for them. Empathy! Having a tutor that struggles (hopefully not anymore) with a subject definitely helps because they are able to understand what you are doing through and are less likely to get frustrated that you cannot grasp a concept, no matter how "simple" it may be. I'm wonderful at communication, I'm patient/do not get frustrated easily, and I am…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. I suspect that this may be hard for some students at first but I am confident that they will be able to get the most out of mathematics and other…

Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. It is only that foundation can a tutor be able to deliver his best and at the same time the student will be keen to learn. It is the conducive learning environment that a tutor has to provide to enable the student to work to his/her maximum…

The bare minimum a tutor should do is to aid a student in their academic journey, however the optimal result would be for tutors to create an enjoyable learning experience for the student. Specifically in mathematics, I believe I have the creativity to come up with multiple approaches to a certain problem. Thinking outside of the box, I could show…

Be passionate about what you're teaching is the most important thing a tutor can do for their student so that they enjoy learning their subject and hopefully become keen to practice it after tutor hours. Inside LewishamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liam worked on addition and subtraction using number lines, as well as identifying equality statements and basic counting strategies through interactive games.

In Year 10, Emily focused on BODMAS equations and fractions from her homework before tackling introductory algebra questions involving like terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Andrea revised percentage calculations without a calculator and practised the unitary method to solve real-world profit scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to show full working in algebra and coordinate geometry, leading to hidden errors; as one tutor observed, "extra attention to detail would help minimise mistakes."

In Year 9, a student often avoided writing out solutions neatly or following class formats, which made it harder to spot where steps went wrong—especially with formula rearrangement.

For a Year 6 learner, forgetting homework and rarely practicing challenging questions limited progress when faced with multi-step division problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 2 student's loss of confidence after setbacks led them to guess answers rather than try new approaches.

Recent Achievements

A Lewisham tutor recently saw Annabelle, a high school student, shift from hesitating with trigonometry to confidently identifying which function—sin, cos, or tan—to use and starting to rearrange equations independently, something she found confusing before.

In another session, Liam (Year 3) began writing his maths and diagrams out neatly without prompting; he used to skip steps and rush through work.

Justin, also in high school, was initially unsure about coordinate geometry but after extra practice now works through algebraic operations more smoothly.

Annabelle finished her lesson by solving a full set of angle sum problems with minimal help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christian Brothers' High School Lewisham.
