The most important thing a tutor can give a student is confidence in their capabilities, As one of my tutors did for me. It is really really important to make the students feel confident when they are right and not making them feel like they did something wrong. My strengths lie in being patient and understanding while being fully immersed in…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

Create a comfortable, relaxed environment to learn and ask questions. Improve confidence: many students don't know what they're capable of, and just need the self-belief to show it off. Be able to react to a student's needs as they develop and progress in order to continue learning as efficiently as possible. I believe I am relatable and good…

Be outgoing. The worst thing is for a student to be scared to ask for help because they feel embarrassed. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to instil confidence. A tutor should promote a genuine interest in a subject, ultimately empowering students to become independent and effective learners. They can do this by promoting critical thinking and providing constructive feedback. Given my experience with tutoring, I believe my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in a student. After a tutoring session, the goal should not be for a student to be able to complete their homework. Instead, the student should gain an understanding of the topic such that they can complete future coursework without the help of a tutor. If that…

Think to pass the belief that the student can achieve the goal. It is just the matter of working hard and maybe trying different approach. And also not comparing yourself to other students, because everyone is unique. I, myself, was in a situation where I had very low marks in Math and Science subjects, but I worked hard and I saw my brain change…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage and empower them. I believe most students can learn most subjects/tasks but it's just about finding the way of learning that works for them. I am positive and encouraging. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. I believe the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide patient and constant support for them outside of their classroom, and try to clear all their doubts effectively. Moreover, a tutor should guide their students in a manner in which they can focus on key areas of improvement and then work on realistic goals, which…

I think enthusiasm is important - I have found in my own studies that when someone isn't enthusiastic about what they are teaching, it can easily dampen one's own ability to take on information. As i mentioned, being patient and encouraging is key to making students feel confident in their learning. Finally, being organised so that when the lesson…

The most important thing for a tutor is that they explicitly explain concepts to a student. This should be done in a way that makes the most intuitive sense to the student. Also, for me, it is essential that a tutor, as well as teaching students, teaches them how to study by themselves and how to teach themselves. This should be done by providing…

Inside LewishamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liam worked on addition and subtraction using number lines, as well as identifying equality statements and basic counting strategies through interactive games.

In Year 10, Emily focused on BODMAS equations and fractions from her homework before tackling introductory algebra questions involving like terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Andrea revised percentage calculations without a calculator and practised the unitary method to solve real-world profit scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to show full working in algebra and coordinate geometry, leading to hidden errors; as one tutor observed, "extra attention to detail would help minimise mistakes."

In Year 9, a student often avoided writing out solutions neatly or following class formats, which made it harder to spot where steps went wrong—especially with formula rearrangement.

For a Year 6 learner, forgetting homework and rarely practicing challenging questions limited progress when faced with multi-step division problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 2 student's loss of confidence after setbacks led them to guess answers rather than try new approaches.

Recent Achievements

A Lewisham tutor recently saw Annabelle, a high school student, shift from hesitating with trigonometry to confidently identifying which function—sin, cos, or tan—to use and starting to rearrange equations independently, something she found confusing before.

In another session, Liam (Year 3) began writing his maths and diagrams out neatly without prompting; he used to skip steps and rush through work.

Justin, also in high school, was initially unsure about coordinate geometry but after extra practice now works through algebraic operations more smoothly.

Annabelle finished her lesson by solving a full set of angle sum problems with minimal help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christian Brothers' High School Lewisham.
