The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to build a strong personal connection with the student and incorporate connections to the student's interest while teaching. It is very important to work on the weaknesses of the student and personalize the teaching accordingly. Following are my strengths as a tutor: 1. My focus on…

*Assist them in solving their mathematical problems with excellence. *Also, to not always just give the answer straight away, but at times help guide them to the correct answer through giving them hints. *Try help them develop an approach to mathematical problem solving (tutors will obviously not be sitting next to them in the exam) and on how…

Not only to foster understanding, but building confidence is essential. This involves fluency of course, but also being confident in trying many methods even if it gets tedious after the first few attempts, while being able to seek help no matter the triviality. I'm patient with all learning paces, and enthusiastic to learn about any student's way…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is allow them to learn. I have seen cases where tutors sit there and answer the student once they get stuck, which I consider detrimental to the child's learning. I recognize the importance of facilitating learning by guiding students rather than just answering their work for them. When I was…

Being on the other side of the spectrum as a tutoring student for many years, I have encountered many tutors whom I have disliked or to this am still grateful for, for the impact they have had on my mindset, which has correspondingly positively affected my academic results. From experience, I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do…

Listen. I find that listening to why the student might be struggling or what they have missed is the first and most important step to helping a student. Secondly a tutor should be able to adapt. Wether that be to a different learning style or struggle and through tutoring be able to help them to understand how to study and progress in their…

While helping students learn is obviously important, the psychological and social aspects of tutoring are arguably much more important. A good tutor will help give their students the support and connection they need so that they can become better, more confident and independent learners. I believe the most vital thing a tutor can do for a student is to give an explanation. We tutors exist to answer and explain questions that a lesson can't provide. Generally, it is best that a student is comfortable asking questions without being judged by classmates and that is the foundation of learning. Not to mention, each tutor might have a…

1. Personalize the learning. every student is different, so what works for one does not necessarily work for the other. 2. Be ready to help. It is most important that a tutor doesn't give up on their students. This means not only continuing teaching the student but also means that the tutor should always believe a student can improve with their guidance. In addition, it is essential for a tutor to be able to learn the student's strengths and weaknesses and their way of thinking, so the…

Inside Linley PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and address challenging question types, while Year 8 student Ethan worked through linear equations and interpreting graphs by constructing number sets from worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby focused on algebraic manipulation—multiplying and dividing terms—and practiced simplifying complex expressions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student forgot to bring required test materials and relied heavily on a calculator, missing out on vital non-calculator skills—"she needs to work on being able to do calculations without a calculator."

In Year 10 algebra, a reluctance to put logic on paper meant errors went unnoticed until feedback was given.

For a Year 8 student, disorganized working when breaking down composite numbers made factorization tasks harder than necessary.

Meanwhile, in primary years, skipping written steps during division led one student to make mistakes that "could have been avoided if workings were shown clearly."

Recent Achievements

One Linley Point tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get lost in algebra now confidently tackles simultaneous equations, even switching between substitution and elimination methods without prompting.

In Year 11, another student who'd previously rushed through answers is now carefully laying out solutions step by step, catching her own errors—especially with trigonometry questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner has shifted from guessing at worded division problems to reading them independently and explaining her reasoning before working out the answer. Last session, she solved three tricky word problems on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunters Hill High School.
