Make them feel confident and comfortable to at least ask questions when they don’t understand something. I feel that quite often when we don’t understand something in school we stay quiet and don’t say anything and assume we will just be able ti figure it out on our own but usually that doesn’t work. Having the confidence to ask questions…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to connect with them so that students can feel free to tell them whether they understand a particular topic or not. This helps the tutor to know what exact topics to help the students. My strengths as a tutor would be ability to connect with the students at their level and also my aim…

Making sure the student actually understands the content being taught. A lot of students have been in that situation where a teacher may ask the student whether they understood the topic presented, and even if they didn't, they would say they did to not slow the class down or bring attention to themselves. This is what tutoring in my belief should…

It is pivotal that the tutor is always easily approachable as otherwise shy students may be reluctant to ask the tutor questions and thus those shy kids may end up falling behind. In addition, I feel that tutors must always be supportive towards the student as any harsh or negative comments may severely hinder a students willingness and ability to…

Melanie, Logan

Inside LoganTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Logan worked on mastering multiplication tables from 2 to 9, focusing both on oral recall and written practice for the higher tables.

In Year 10, Jayden practiced using tree diagrams to solve conditional probability problems and also revised linear equations with a focus on algebraic manipulation.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Hannah reviewed managing money topics by working through tax return calculations and applied these skills in exam-style questions as part of her Money, Travel and Data unit.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, several students struggled to recite times tables fluently; one needed to "learn them by heart" as gaps caused hesitation when solving multiplication problems aloud.

A Year 8 student tackling boxplots and quartiles sometimes forgot methods and relied on the tutor for reassurance, which slowed independent progress.

In Year 10 mathematics, self-doubt was evident—one student "needed to recheck her work often," leading to hesitancy in submitting answers or moving forward.

For a senior Maths Methods task, skipping steps in algebra meant errors went unnoticed until feedback was given: "he jumped straight to the answer instead of breaking it into steps."

Recent Achievements

One Logan tutor noticed a Year 8 student who previously hesitated to ask for help now regularly points out exactly where she gets stuck and checks her understanding before moving on.

In Year 11 maths, Joshua has shifted from needing step-by-step support with turning points and points of inflection to working independently, getting most answers right without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary student who often guessed at times tables has started attempting them mentally first—even if unsure—showing real effort to use strategies rather than guessing. At the end of her lesson, she asked for extra practice questions.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I am extremely happy with Nicky's tutoring. She instantly developed a lovely rapport with my daughter Bonnie. Nicky is very patient and great at explaining maths concepts in a way that is easy for Bonnie to understand. I am already seeing a much more positive attitude to maths in Bonnie and she feels more confident to do maths lessons at school. We got a good one!

Oscar is learning more from Sean than he is in the classroom. Sean is very patient and has established rapport.

Chloe gets along very well with Huey & has told us she feels much better already.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Logan Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Woodridge State School.
