The most important things a tutor can do for a student is promote the key values that will transfer into academic understanding and success, including perseverance and patience. Further, it is important for tutors to make learning enjoyable and focus on the small improvements. I work well with children and understand the importance of patience and…

I believe that tutors can offer a unique perspective that cannot be expected from a professional teacher. Consisting mostly of undergraduate and postgraduate students, most tutors would still have the memories of high school fresh in their minds. Therefore, students would understand on a personal level the sort of challenges that a student might…

I feel it is a priority of the tutor to pass on their passion for learning and knowledge to their students. Once this has been accomplished, however long it takes, teaching content and having the student learn it quickly and confidently is simple. Equally important is for the student to feel safe and respected around the tutor. If they do not…

To not give extra bad pressure to students. A tutor should help make a learning environment and time, where learning a frustrating topic becomes enjoyable, rather than further creating a frustrating learning environment which can lead to more stress in school. The aim as a tutor is to help the student gain courage in their ability to learn the…

Making the student feel confident in his abilities so he doesn't feel discouraged. However, at the same time make sure he understands where he needs to work on himself. That balance in critical. For me, connection and knowledge are the most important thing you can provide for a student. Students will never learn if you are only "teaching" a student, but you also have to understand them by making a connection so you can strategies their learning style. I always join math competitions from primary to college and I am very proud that I was…

Make them interested in the content. The students won't want to learn unless they care about the content and while grades are good motivators, pure enjoyment and interest in a subject make it easier to learn. I can teach a varied range of subjects but can quickly adjust to each individual students needs. I try to find an approach that the student…

It is extremely important for the student to feel comfortable around me so that they engage in the learning journey. Here, they'd feel okay to ask questions and take in the information more easily. Moreover, I understand that not everyone learns the same way and I would figure which methods work best for my student. Finally, academic goals are key…

To motivate the student so that their learning occurs beyond the time constrained limits of the tutoring session. To help the student understand why something is true rather than merely memorising facts which can hinder learning. Seeing the reasons behind formulae, processes, etc. expands students' minds and allows them to learn new material more easily. The most important thing for a tutor to do is inspire self-believe and uncover topics that may become a passion for children. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is not just focus on changing the grades. This will give the students an opportunity for lifelong learning…

Inside LotaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ava practised multiplication facts for 2, 3, 5, and 10 and solved true or false statements about these tables.

Year 10 student Sam worked on **quadratic equations** and explored exponential functions and their graphs to strengthen algebra skills.

For Year 11, Mia focused on arithmetic and geometric series, tackling sequence questions using **formulae and diagrams** to visualise patterns.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student was often eager to "rush through" addition and subtraction tasks, which led to skipped steps and confusion between operations—"Lucas sometimes draws an extra circle or misses one because he is really fast," noted a tutor.

In English, another child hesitated to read aloud challenging words, preferring comfort-zone vocabulary over unfamiliar terms; this reluctance limited confidence growth during reading sessions.

For a senior student in data handling (Year 10), plotting graphs became difficult when they forgot to double-check bracket placement in formulas, leading to incorrect results that had to be retraced from scratch.

Recent Achievements

A Lota tutor recently noticed Ruby, a high school student, now applies the seasonal index formula independently to identify trends—something she previously needed step-by-step guidance for.

Isaac, also in high school, was able to graph exponential functions on his own and accurately predict their behavior after struggling with this abstract topic just weeks ago.

In primary sessions, Lucas began asking for help when he didn't understand subtraction with borrowing rather than quietly guessing—he then completed all his subtraction exercises correctly without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wynnum Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lota State School.
