I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. It’s not just about helping them understand the content, it’s also about building their self-belief and showing them that they "can" succeed. A good tutor should also adapt their…

Besides grades, I would say that a tutor is also essentially teaching the student life skills such as responsibility and perseverance. I had this unmotivated student. He wouldn't complete the homework that I had given him and often fell asleep in class. I started to find out the reason behind his behavior and I used it to my advantage, Over…

The most important is to be there and present when students are struggling. To be observe the weaknesses of each students and provide ways of improvement. Be compassionate and patient, ask students if they have understood that particular concept. I'm good listener, ensuring that students are comfortable to tell me when they are unaware of certain…

Moreover, students can help students understand complex concepts by providing clear explanations, examples, and demonstrations. Additionally, a tutor can assess the student's strengths and weaknesses in a subject and use this assessment to create…

I feel a tutor must be able to invoke a sense of interest and joy in a students minds for the subject they teach. As a tutor, you are someone who has studied the subject beforehand and are more knowledgeable about the subject than a student who is just starting out. This makes it difficult for tutors to reach their maximum potential while teaching…

Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

The way I make the lesson engaging, enjoyable, and student-specific. Lessons are catered to based on their skills, needs, and learning style. Positive impacts must be…

The most important qualities are patience and compassion. When a tutor is knowledgeable about the subject and shows understanding towards students who are struggling, those students will feel safe and be more open to learning. According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. From my experience, one of the most important thing I can do is finding out the weakness of students and helping them overcome that weakness instead of letting them away from it. Inside Lower MitchamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Harry worked through solving probability problems using Venn diagrams and tree diagrams, including events without replacement.

In Year 10, Olivia practised quadratic graphing by finding x- and y-intercepts and the turning point for different equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben focused on the basics of differentiation, tackling first principles as well as applying product, quotient, and chain rules to various functions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Specialist Maths, unclear working and untidy formatting ("needs to work on making formatting of questions clearer for examiner") led to errors compounding across multi-step calculus problems.

For a Year 10 science assignment, not gathering resources ahead of lessons meant lost time setting up instead of discussing ideas.

A Year 8 student's over-reliance on mimicking previous solutions in algebra caused repeated sign errors—"relies on previous problems' structure and copying it down."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student often added when multiplication was required, particularly with larger numbers, resulting in confusion during worded perimeter tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Lower Mitcham tutor noticed a real change in a Year 11 student who, after struggling to connect chemistry assignments with class content, started referencing articles independently and wrote significant parts of each paragraph without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step guidance began tackling her maths homework solo—she finished most questions on her own and only asked for help with the trickiest two.

In primary sessions, Sarah used to hesitate when multiplying large numbers but now works through them with much less prompting and greater independence.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mitcham Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Scotch College - Torrens Park Campus.
